Mortgage while pregnant - lenders who don't ask probing questions

DH and I are going through the process of applying for a mortgage for our first property at the moment. We have a mortgage in principle and have spoken to some brokers.

I am 9 weeks pregnant and haven't disclosed this to anyone (other than DH and healthcare provider) as I was under the impression that as the baby wasn't born yet it isn't a dependent.

However, I have now read (partly on here) that you may be asked about maternity leave plans, specifically. Is that even legal?

Does anyone know about who these lenders are so we can avoid them?

I was 18 weeks pregnant when i did my mortgage and just hid it. I knew i was going back to work and we can afford the repayments

I'm a mortgage adviser- just don't tell them!

WazFlimFlam · 16/04/2018 20:20

Thanks stylishmummy, don't tell the broker or don't tell the bank/building society?

Personally I didn't tell either, I wasn't showing and it can significantly affect your affordability. If asked about family plans just say you're focusing on your career for now

We remortgaged when I was 32 weeks pregnant, so no chance if hiding the bump under a jumper. Given that nursery fees run at £1000 a month I don't think it's unreasonable for the mortgage provider to factor it in - for us it was our biggest outgoings. But maybe some lenders don't ???

MetroBank

Neither asked, And we didn't bring it up. Anyways all the work is now online so no one might see your bump to begin with. None of the forms ask either.

Try Santander, got a mortgage with them whilst pregnant. They didn't ask and I didn't tell!

You generally get asked if you're aware of any upcoming change of circumstances, that covers all bases including baby.
Personally if it were me I wouldn't mention the pregnancy but only IF you are very confident that you will still be able to afford the repayments taking into account any drop in income, childcare costs and the possibility that interests rates could go up quite a bit. Also consider if you're expecting to have a drop in income what you would do at the end of the fixed rate deal (although many lenders don't ask questions if you're just moving on to s new fixed rate deal).

I was pregnant when I applied for a mortgage. I went through a mortgage broker. I never mentioned it as I had every intention of going back to work after mat leave (which I did).

The only question the broker asked was do you see any changes to your income happening so I just said no as I still had a few months left at work and the first 4.5 months of Mat leave were at full pay anyway plus I had accrued annual leave to take at full pay too (another months worth) so it didn't make sense to mention a temporary dip in income on a mortgage I could easily afford anyway

PaulDacreRimsGeese · 22/04/2018 20:51

I wasn't pregnant when we got ours, but was never asked if I was and we didn't meet the broker or anyone from the bank in person.

I was 6 months gone when we applied for a mortgage. Broker knew as he was a friend but said baby is not here so isnt a dependant and we didnt disclose the info. Mortgage co didnt ask any questions. (Purchase fell through in the end but that is neither here nor there). In your position you dont have any dependants.

We got our mortgage whilst I was on maternity leave my son was only a few months old. We weren't asked many questions I just had to get a letter from my employer stating my earnings and the date I was returning to work. We are with NatWest. I wouldn't mention it if I were you though as long as you know you can afford the monthly out goings it shouldn't matter.
