I only work part time so don't have huge amounts going in out a different story

And since discovering Barclays are now sponsoring mermaids it's given me a final push to try and move banks.

Preferably to one with mimimal fees , a decent sized free over draft if that eve exists

And no fancy crap i won't use or need.

Is this possible ? Where should I go?

I could be wrong but I don’t think any banks offer free overdrafts these days, bar a nominal amount to cover any minor miscalculations with bills ect.

19lottie82 · 09/04/2018 21:51

What’s your problem with Barclays (Apart from the mermaid sponsoring)?

Gileswithachainsaw · 09/04/2018 21:58

They just don't seem very honest about their fees. I've been in to query why I was being charged fees for an account when I had no need for any of what itbwas offering. To be told they would change it back to what I originally thought it was and now I've just discovered there are still account charge.

My fault I should have checked however I don't like the dishonesty so was looking for a change but all the perks of accounts seem to rely on certain amounts being paid in.. .

Co-op are very good Smile

Gileswithachainsaw · 09/04/2018 22:09

Thank you:) can you switch without going into the bank as we don't have a local branch?

I recommend The Co op too.
No frills no fuss.

I use Halifax always have and I have no problems or complaints, joint account with dp is HSBC though and my god it drives me insane!

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 09/04/2018 22:46

I really like Santander 123 Lite account. I don't know what the overdraft charges are like sorry, but I get cash back on all my outgoings without having to pay a big charge when I wouldn't get interest like on the normal account. I make about £8-10 a month on cashback which isn't huge but it's better than nothing Smile
The staff in our branch are lovely and it makes a huge difference.
I've had bad experiences of the Halifax, but they do seem a little better these days.

Gileswithachainsaw · 09/04/2018 23:07

I'm too poor for the Santander account Blush

The coop is looking like a top co tender so far . However it would be the one bank this town doesn't have Hmm

I will call this week though and see if I can do it all online

I pay 10.50 a month at Barclays and get rac cover and travel insurance and a 200 pound overdraft. They were very thorough when going through the package I needed. Also the blue rewards gets £4 a month back.

Glug44 · 10/04/2018 07:16

Unlikely to get a free overdraft unless you pay a fee / a full time salary into the account. If you have a free or cheap overdraft now then stick with the account.

Millybingbong · 10/04/2018 07:18

£10 a month? I just bought annual family travel insurance for £23 and rac is only eighty basic.

I hate these rackets where people think they are doing them a good deal

Thanksfortheinfo · 10/04/2018 07:26

First direct are all online/phone and you get £100 for switching to them. £250 fee free overdraft. Excellent customer service

You might struggle to move banks if your a low earner. Restrictions have really been tightened up so you might just be offered a basic bank account with no overdraft & maybe not even a contactless debit card

Vitalogy · 10/04/2018 07:38

Building societies. No one ever seems to mention them.
I found Halifax to have long winded pain in the bum system so left.

Frouby · 10/04/2018 07:43

My mum is a low earner and hasn't had a current account for years or any real credit history. I have just helped her open a Yorkshire Bank B Account and it was pretty straightforward. The online app is simple, it gets a savings account with it and she had no problems. We did it online then popped into the branch with her ID. But they did say they can usually verfiy people via their experian report but she hasn't had credit so they couldn't do it that way.

Not sure about overdrafts tho.

GrumpyOldMare · 10/04/2018 07:46

I'm a part time worker and use Nationwide.Great customer service. No charges and even a flippin' contactless card. I hate contactless so just use it the ''old fashioned'' way

justawhisper · 10/04/2018 07:47

I'm lloyds and they're ok.

treaclesoda · 10/04/2018 07:49

Nationwide Flex Account. It's the basic no fee one.

I work part time so am a low earner and I had no trouble being accepted for the account. Their online banking is excellent.

There are minimal charges on an overdraft as long as it is within your agreed limit. And the one time I miscalculated and went into an unagreed overdraft by accident they were willing to refund the charges because it was a one off.

Kannet · 10/04/2018 08:05

Nationwide is very good
