Should I leave my job?

Hi there,

I have a job which I enjoy. I am currently off ill as I keep having seizures which is a terrifying time.

I am due back at work very soon, and continue to spend my days not knowing if I will have a seizure and have to make sure I am never alone, i.e. taking main streets whilst walking instead of the faster, quieter routes incase it happens.

I was wondering, would it be unreasonable to leave my job and apply for something like ESA until I find out what is wrong and stop having seizures? I don't have a clue if I would even be entitled to anything because nothing has been diagnosed, but at the moment I'm absolutely terrified of going anywhere. Thank you

You would need to exhaust any sick pay before you can claim ESA.

Ah okay I thought that may be the case.

I think I'm just really worried that they'll be angry at me for being off so long I guess - but it's a scary time and I hope they understand

I'm sure they will understand and hopefully make adjustments for you . Hopefully it can become well controlled soon and you may be able to continue with your job unless it involves operating machinery or driving etc. Your employer is obliged to pay you as much sick pay as their policy states, if it is just statutory sick pay then this should last for 28 weeks. Once this runs out the ESA takes over if you are unable to go back to work. There may also be the possibility of claiming Pip which is a long term disability benefit but whether you can get that depends how well controlled your epilepsy is and how much it affects your daily living.
