TV licencing!

Forevertired19 · 17/03/2018 21:39

My tv licence ran out two weeks ago. I've had a lot of money troubles and do not currently have a television. I have Netflix etc on a telly upstairs. ( Google chrome cast) but I do not use iplayer etc. I mainly stuck to Netflix and amazon for anything we watch. I've a young child and due soon.. I'd love the time to watch telly!
I contacted them ASAP as I realised I'd ran out of my licence and asked if it was possible to pay £12 a month. I do not have £130+ (forgot the amount) upfront. I just can't do it. I'm really struggling to keep the roof over my head. But anyway they said the option was there on the website to do this but there isn't. I'm not sure if it's because we're relatively new to having our own home, I'm not sure why. I tried emailing back but I don't get a reply for ages.
So obviously I can't afford it. I don't use it either. But now I'm getting letters saying I could face prosecution...

Anyone know how to get around this? It wouldn't bother me bloody paying if I could split these payments up. But 130+ I can't do upfront.

I have a Cash Easy Entry card that I can pay money off anytime at my local shop. The phone number is 08457 289 289. Call them on Monday and see if they will issue you with one. You may need your TV license number.

Looking at the website, it looks like the only ways to pay in instalments are by direct debit or payment card. With the payment card and the monthly direct debit, you have to pay for the first full licence within 6 months, so the payments would be around £24 a month for the first 6 months (the direct debit also has a small extra charge, looks like the payment card doesn’t). Then the payments go down to £12 a month, as you pay for your next year’s licence six months in advance and six months in arrears. Or you could pay £38 plus a £1.25 premium every three months by quarterly direct debit.

The payment card can be used to make weekly payments of £6 which might be easier to manage than £24 in a lump every month.

If you aren't watching live tv or using iPlayer you don't need a tv license. We don't have one. You just fill in the form online and they send a certificate in post saying you don't require one, they then check yearlyish via letter that it's still the same circumstances and you send back the slip. I haven't had one in nearly 6 years.

You can pay by monthly direct debit.

It literally doesn't give me the option to pay monthly. I don't use it anyway so I think cancelling is the better option

You dont need a licence if you dont watch iplayer, bbc channels and live programmes as they are being broadcast.

Ring them its freephone and they will send you a letter confirming your choice. They will also ask you questions to make sure you dont need one.

From what you posted regarding your TV situation, you DON'T need a TV licence.

Why are you even bothered?

Why are you wasting your time phoning TVL?

Do you phone the DVLA to tell them you dont have a car and can't drive anyway?

They wont care. Those letters are computer generated.

Stop stressing.

Vitalogy · 20/03/2018 18:23

Even if you tell them you don't require a licence, which you don't OP, They just ignore and send the threatening letters anyway. So I advise you to ignore them altogether and don't engage with any crapita employee if they come to your door.
