Ok so I'm a student and not great with money (although not terrible). Ive run out of money for this term and need something to tide me over (living costs) until the next lot of student finance (under 1 month).
I've applied for, and been approved for a student credit card. Just waiting for the terms and conditions to come through but I have a few questions on how it works so if someone clever doesn't mind helping me out I'd really appreciate it!
Will I be able to transfer funds to my current account from my credit card? Or another account?
Will I be able to use it like a normal debit card?
Are there some shops which don't accept credit?
Does all of this depend on the specific credit card terms and conditions?

I'm a bit scared of credit to be honest so I'm only going to use it when I really need to and ignore it the rest of the time. I know I'll be able to pay back the credit within the interest free period so not too worried about that. I'm most concerned about trying to use it and being declined! TIA

Who do you bank with? My DS has a student account with Nationwide which gives him a free £1000 overdraft.

Santander do a £2000 free overdraft.

Don't withdraw cash using your credit card it will be really bad for your credit rating.

Balance transfers are from one credit card to another. Nothing to do with bank accounts Smile

Some information from a charity called the money advice service

www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/credit-cards
There's a lot more on the site about finance and there is a budgeting tool you can use online.

Balance transfers are between credit cards. What you’re looking for is a Money Transfer, and only certain credit cards have these offers. You will have to ask if you have that option when your paper work comes.

Unless you've used up all your free overdraft, you really won't need to use the credit card.

I really think you should ask your bank for a temporary overdraft instead of using the credit card. As previous posters have said, it will most likely be interest free in the short term and a much easier way to handle your needs (e.g. Will mean your direct debit won't bounce). It is also far more likely to happen v quickly (same day) vs the credit card application which could easily take 10 days to come through.

Definitely ask for an overdraft if it's just a £30 Dd that needs to be covered.
