Can a shop charge 50p when I

Pay for a gas meter top up on my debit

I have been topping it up at the local shop for the last year without any issues whatever amount I ask to go on is what I am charged.

Today I asked for £50 to go on my gas card and they charged me £50.50

The man in the shop is passive aggressive and quite strange with me in general. I thought shops had stopped this charge.

I wasn't sure if there would be some reason gas would be different so didn't challenge it as he's unpleasant and I was desperate to get back and warm up the house.

i dont think that they are allowed to charge you now - report them to trading standards? or someone ? no idea who to report to if i am honest!

19lottie82 · 28/02/2018 10:35

Yes, they can charge you. It costs a retailer money to accept a card payment. Plenty of other places charge too.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 28/02/2018 10:37

That's if you're paying by credit card, 19lottie82, not if you're buying a gas card.

Chapsview · 28/02/2018 10:39

As a private customer they are not allowed to charge you a fee for credit cards any more. If you are using a debit card they are only allowed to charge you a fee that covers what it costs them and no more. There is no way it will have cost him 50p for the transaction.

Options - report him or go to a fee free cash point and get the cash out and pay with that.

I got the impression the OP was topping up her gad card using a debit card. Retailers are allowed to charge for accepting debit card payments (as well as credit card payments).

19lottie82 · 28/02/2018 10:40

chaps a debit card charge for the retailer is usually 1-1.5% so a £50 top up = 50-75p charge.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/cards/2018/01/cards-fees-to-be-banned-from-saturday/amp they aren't allowed to charge unless they charge for all types of payments. Have they set a minimum payment you have to make ?

PositiveVibes18 · 28/02/2018 10:41

No he can't charge you 50p it's against the law now.

Celticlassie · 28/02/2018 10:41

Is it not now illegal to charge extra for using a credit card?

dementedpixie · 28/02/2018 10:42

Debit/credit card charges have been stopped so OP shouldn't be charged for making a debit card payment

How are the rules changing?
Under current rules, which came into force in 2013, companies should only charge you what it costs them to process a debit or credit card payment. However, consumers can still face hefty charges, with fees typically about 2% and on some smaller transactions accounting for as much as 20% of the bill.

From Saturday 13 January all surcharges for paying via credit or debit card will be banned – this includes payment methods linked to your card, such as PayPal or Apple Pay. Companies are still allowed to levy a surcharge if you opt to pay by cash or cheque.

Banning credit card fees should make a real difference on some purchases. For example, British Airways currently charges a 1% fee of up to £20 on credit cards, Ryanair charges 2% on credit cards and the DVLA a £2.50 fee on credit cards – from Saturday, these charges won't apply. (And if you're about to book with a firm that charges fees, it may be worth waiting.)

The change is coming in as part of a law setting out new payment regulations. The regulations are based on an EU directive which will apply throughout the EU – but as this is a UK law change the new rules will continue to apply after Brexit.

I think I've been wrongly charged a fee – how do I report it?
If a company tries to charge you a fee simply because you are choosing to pay by card, you can refuse and complain to the company saying this is not allowed. You can also report it to Trading Standards – and let us know at [email protected] as we'll be keeping close tabs on any firms that flout the rules.

If you are wrongly charged a fee, you can complain to the company and ask it to refund the charge.

@dementedpixie I need to find out if there's a minimum payment as I've been in the queue behind an old lady asking for £4 on her gas

Thanks so much for the replies. I've not ever been charged there before so feel it's very odd he's decided to bring in a charge now.

To clarify I was using my visa debit card to pay for £50 to go onto my gas card

The new law banning the charges is why the shops near me now refuse to accept card payments for all meter top up transactions. They will only deal in cash for them. It’s a pain in the bum if there isn’t a cash point that’s working nearby.

specialsubject · 02/03/2018 09:44

Unintended consequences in action. Obvious result.

somewhereovertherain · 03/03/2018 12:52

It’s now illegal to surcharge for payment type.

And it’s only about .45% for a debit card on a card machine.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 03/03/2018 18:39

The reason I was given was that the 1% the card machine charged them meant they made no profit at all on the transactions, and they weren’t prepapred to make them ‘free’ so they now only accept cash and keep their minuscule cut.

MrsElvis · 03/03/2018 18:57

So the general feel is that this is illegal... I really hate going into that shop. It's the only one in my village but will now go elsewhere or at least pay cash for the gas card
