Housing deposit needed

Wondering if anyone can help me. We are needing to move due to our current flat being too small, (tiny 1 bed, 1st floor, no bath and it's me oh toddler ds and baby no 2 due in 2 months) the trouble is we are struggling to get a deposit together. We are bottom of the council housing list and our local council doesn't do a deposit guarantee scheme for private rentals. Does anybody know of any charities or anything like that that offer help to people trying to move? We're getting pretty desperate and the tiny space and no outside area for my little boy to play in is really really starting to get me down

I have never heard of any charities that lend money for a deposit, only councils . You could speak to shelter to see if they have any advice?

You'll be surprised at how well you manage. You'll be classed as overcrowded once new baby arrives so you might have more luck with the council then. I had two DC in a 1 bed first floor flat no garden no bath and we were fine. It took us 15 months to save up for a deposit for private rent. Was a long road but we got there. You may just have to be patient and play the long game.

There are schemes with likes of ymca. Your council office should be able to advise.

If you’re struggling to save a deposit how will you afford to pay the extra rent for a bigger place?

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 25/02/2018 16:41

I borrowed £1400 from my council for my deposit. I pay it back £10 a month.

You could join your local Credit Union but you need to pay in for a while before you can withdraw. Might be a way of saving something towards the move. Plenty of families live in flats with small children and no outdoor space though.

Some agents are starting to do no deposit options, but I think they can have high charges

Maybe not the best idea to have another baby before you had the money for a bigger flat.

Thehogfather · 25/02/2018 17:42

Put whatever the difference is in rent between current flat and potential properties away each month.

You could also ask cab about any local schemes.

Viviennemary · 25/02/2018 17:46

No I don't think there are charities for that particular purpose AFAIK. Lots of people are struggling to find a deposit. Why didn't you wait before you had another baby if you knew you were going to be overcrowded. No bath must be difficult. Perhaps the council can help.

Chienrouge · 25/02/2018 17:51

Agree with Thehogfather. Put away whatever the difference in rent would be between your current place and a bigger one. This will help you save the deposit money and also get you used to living with that figure as an outgoing.
