Expired MOT certificate

Smaug · 03/05/2007 14:46

I've just checked the MOT certificate on the car we bought in September to see when the MOT is due and found that is says expiry January 2007 . Now, I think we may have got it MOT when it went to garage in September, just after we bought it, but I can't find the certificate. Dh may have it, but I can't speak to him atm the check.

I'm having a bit of a panic as I'm meant to go out in it in an hour. Surely, if we were 4 months overdue with the MOT we'd have had a fine from the DVLA by now?

Any ideas?

no DVLA wouldn't know if your MOT is up, it would invalidate your insurance.

quadrophenia · 03/05/2007 14:47

you can't just get an MOT when you buy a car, it has to be due for one, so if its says january then I'm afraid it was jan. get it booked in asap and don't drive it as you are not insured.

Jelley · 03/05/2007 14:48

DVLA don't have MOT records, but the garage will have it if you know when you took it.

quadrophenia · 03/05/2007 14:50

yes but you can't get a new one until the old one runs out so you couldn't have had one in september sorry

Jelley · 03/05/2007 14:52

True. Didn't hink of that when I posted. (Unless you took it to the garage when you bought it and said you had no MOT?)

iota · 03/05/2007 14:55

I think you are wrong about that Quad - see here - a garage can issue a new certificate when they sell a car

iota · 03/05/2007 14:57

more info here

quadrophenia · 03/05/2007 14:57

doesn't it say it has to be done wihin the calendar month that it is due?

iota · 03/05/2007 14:58

I think this bit gives it away

"An MOT can be carried out at any time"

quadrophenia · 03/05/2007 15:01

oh yeah stupid me, blardy typical i give someone advice and its bollocks, i was so sure aswell

Smaug · 03/05/2007 15:03

Thanks all. My lovely garage have said they can do it tomorrow, so phew.

can's believe there is no centralised system for this, as they have for road tax. Ah well. Must work out a foolproof system for not missing this again. My nerves can't stand it.

was going to say MOT doesnt have to be due to be done, we are picking up a car next week and the garage will do the mot just before we get it. Quad is right in saying it does invalidate your insurance though if you were to have an accident.

Smaug · 03/05/2007 15:04

Never mind quad!

phone the garage, they will have a record

gscrym · 03/05/2007 15:04

A car can be MOT'd within a calander month prior to the certificate running out. This will give you a 13 month MOT (sort of). It can be MOT'd anytime you like but you will only get 12 months from the date of testing. Dealerships often sell cars that have a few months left on the MOT but will re-test as part of the conditions of sale.

If the car doesn't have an MOT, you may drive it but only to a pre-booked MOT test at an authorised centre. If stopped by the police, they'll check the car is booked in and if it isn't, you'll get done for it.

oliveoil · 03/05/2007 15:05

so was it due in Jan then? Or Sept?

If jan you have been driving without insurance for months!!!

madmarchhare · 03/05/2007 15:05

I think DVLA do have some sort of access to MOT records as they can check when you tax your car online. I dont think they actively search out those that have run out though. CHeck with garage.

Smaug · 03/05/2007 15:06

Managed to speak to dh and he was pretty sure that we didn't get it done in Sept. I'm so annoyed with myself for not being more organised.

OP posts:
oliveoil · 03/05/2007 15:07

well the garage should have phoned you to say it was due if they had anything about them

Smaug · 03/05/2007 15:09

Yes olive . Did find this which seemed to indicate I might be ok with regard to insurance as long as the car is in roadworthy condition (and it is).

I didn't do it on purpose, honest! I just had September lodged in my head.

Garage is very good, but I wouldn't expect them to remind me. They wouldn't have known when it expired anyway. [slapped wrist]

they would if they had done the MOT

dh has a diary and phones up their doddery old customers and collects them and makes them a cup of tea

bundle · 03/05/2007 15:14

bundle · 03/05/2007 15:56
