tax credits to universal credits

I am currently claiming tax credits but will soon be moving out and paying rent. I want to swap to universal credits as it will help me out so much more. There is the rule that you can claim both, would I still be able to apply for uc and they will automatically swap me around? I know this seems silly but I really don't want to get into trouble. Thank you

I understand that I am not moving yet

So in the 5 weeks before your claim comes through how will you pay the first and second months rent and all your other bills and living costs?

Speckledfrog5 · 21/02/2018 00:11

I am living with my parents currently

Again, I am able to cover the 5 weeks

Ok. But to make a claim for rent help you would already have to be living somewhere and have a tenancy agreement and proof of transactions paying the rent.

If you mean that your parents will be paying a rental deposit, 1 maybe 2 months rent, all utilities, childcare, groceries then I think uc will take an issue with this and count it as unearned income which if so they deduct pound for pound off your award. I am just trying to explain that you need to have a rental situation in place in your name only to be eligible to claim this help.

Speckledfrog5 · 21/02/2018 00:17

Yes I understand that and would be able for so many months

No that is not what I mean, I have saved my money

Ah ok I see that is good. Just double check you are not over the savings thresholds for uc. You can have 6k saved without penalty.

Speckledfrog5 · 21/02/2018 00:42

I am under the savings, I have saved for rent and I have already baught some of my household things and I have a large family who I asked to not buy me presents for my 18th and 19th birthday since i knew I was having a baby and would be moving out and asked if they could wait until then. I do not freeload from my parents they just won't see us somewhere that isn't right forus

No, child maintenance payments are NOT taken into account under UC!

From the UC regulations:

"Maintenance payments for the claimant or partner made by a spouse..... should be taken fully into account.... NOTE: spousal maintenance is not the same as maintenance paid in respect of a child. Child maintenance is not taken into account as income"
