neighbour across road just knocked. asked if i had a grey cat (panikd as thought been run over) said yes and he said, it has been sleeping on his mums new mobility car and scratched the bonnet. cant claim on his insurance and that when it goes back next year they will have to pay for the marks!!!!

told him to come back later and speak to hubby. any advise, comments?

not quite sure what he expects us to do

My cat often sleeps on cars and has never scratched them.Am thinking that he's looking for an easy excuse maybe.
I actually can't think of any time where a cat sleeping on a car has resulted in scratches.Would be sceptical if I were you

fryalot · 30/04/2007 11:37

I think that the general rule is that you can train dogs, so you are responsible for their actions, and you can't train cats, so you are NOT responsible for their actions.

Sounds to me like they are trying it on, but I don't think you're liable anyway.

Congratulations on such a weird thread title, I just had to look!

franyfroo · 30/04/2007 11:38

well i did wonder. think hes trying it on, but dont really want to start falling out with people

Thinking about it the cat would have to put quite a bit of pressure on claws to cause scatches in car paintwork.Would ask if they have proof that it was your cat if not tell them that in that case you have no responsibility sorry

DrNortherner · 30/04/2007 11:42

I have seen my cat walk accross the bonnet of my car and it is not scratched. Plus when cats sleep they don't have their claws out do they?

Tell him you trim the claws regularly.

I would look at the scratches though as it is a strage one......

AngharadGoldenhand · 30/04/2007 11:43

My cats sleep on our cars and have never scratched them.

Neighbour trying it on?

singingmum · 30/04/2007 11:46

You could of course tell them that you have taken the MN answer and have decided that the jury says cat not guilty

Rachmumoftwo · 30/04/2007 11:46

Cats are renowned for their lightfootedness, so it sounds like he is trying it on. Why not check if you would have liability with an insurance broker? Just to cover your back of course. Also, if you can't be held liable, probably nor can his mum when she returns it, so you could maybe offer reassurance to your neighbour?

elkiedee · 30/04/2007 11:48

I don't understand the bit about the car being returned next year, surely people who qualify for mobility cars don't get a new one annually?

singingmum · 30/04/2007 11:51

I think they can have it for a year or more.My mum had one and after I think 3 yrs they replaced it to keep vehicles reliable.
A lot chose to add money to buy though I think

franyfroo · 30/04/2007 11:56

dont know about that bit its just what he said. his mum doesnt even drive. will call insurance company. im surrounded by idiots in this road anyway so one more wont really make a difference. am off to knit the cat some booties now

what a load of tosh!!!!! just look out for your kitty though in case he does anything bad.

some people!

alp · 03/05/2007 17:21

surely the cat would only put its claws out if someone was trying to push it off - so if he tried give the cat a shove off the car then its his own fault.....
