How much life assurance is advisable?

Looking for advice as I don't really have anyone I can discuss with in real life! We are considering whether we have been too cautious with the amount of life assurance we have and whether we would be better scaling down and saving the premiums instead.

I am very risk averse and also extra cautious due to my dad having died while I was a child. We currently have death and critical illness insurance to pay off the mortgage, accident, sickness and unemployment cover and a family protection policy which pays out £5k per month until our youngest child is 21 if either of us dies so that the remaining partner wouldn't have the stress of having to work whilst dealing with grief, traumatised children etc. This gives reassurance but is so expensive- we pay over £300 per month!

What do other people have? If you don't have cover, do you worry about what happens if one of you dies or gets an illness which means you can't work etc? I would love to save the premiums instead but obviously it would take years to save anything sufficient to cover us in those circumstances.

There is no bank of mum and dad as neither are willing/ able to help if needed so we need to ensure we protect ourselves fully as there's no-one to help out in a financial emergency.

Thanks in advance for any views!

We have fixed term life assurance that pays out £200,000 if either of us die and double that if we both do.
That is all.
Have never considered any of the other policies to be worth the cost.
The two policies cost us £50 a month all up.

That is a lot of money. Would you need £5000 a month if your mortgage was paid off?
