Confused: Income Tax and Salary Calculators

Cross posted in the Chat section due the epic freak out i'm enduring.

Please could someone help me out regarding Income Tax and Salary Calculators, I'm scared I am about to be hit with a gigantic bill.

I started work at the end of August 2017; I hadn't work between April and August of 2017. I was over taxed due to be on an emergency tax code, changed to the "L" tax code and paid back all of the tax I had paid.

Since then (and I am now going into work to check as this month's pay check should me out), I haven't had any income tax taken from my monthly salary. I have continued to pay national insurance and pension contributions.

I think I am over my 11,500 personal allowance now, and I am worried they are going to claw back all my tax from one salary pay packet.

I've looked at the salary calculators online and it says that for 31000 I should be paying 3,900 income tax year per - this is all of my take home pay. I feel sick.

Can anyone explain to me what to do and where I have gone wrong please? I didn't ask for my tax to be returned, I just asked that I was put on the correct tax code so I wasn't over taxed.

As you didn't work for a few months, you might not pay tax for a while. The same thing happened with my DP.

If you're really worried, I would just contact HMRC

Also, stop worrying.

What is your YTD salary?

What will you have earned by the end of March?

NI is deducted at a lower amount than income tax.

Sorry, your post is too confusing. Get this month's pay slip then list the year to date pay and tax so people can see what has happened.
If you are on PAYE it should be right and they should not take all tax owed back in one pay cycle.

£31K is £2583 per month. Starting at end August presumably means paid end Sept, Oct, Nov and Dec so far. Gross pay after 4 months would be £10,332 so your January pay will take you over the tax free threshold. Have you seen your January payslip yet?

If you only work 7/12 months in the tax year, you will earn £18,000 this tax year. Which after personal allowance is £6500 of taxable income which @20% is £1,300 of tax. You have pension contributions too so it will be less than that.

It will be deducted evenly once you have used all your unused PA from the months you did not work.
