will this affect my credit rating?

Have had a letter from credit style ltd saying that my energy company has asked them for assistance in bringing my overdue account up to date.

This is around the time when we normally get a bill so I've been looking out for one -- I assume the energy company sent one but it never arrived.

I've paid the energy company straight away. As it's the weekend their phone lines are closed.

  1. Will this affect my credit rating? Trying to buy a house soon so worried about this.
  1. Did I do the right thing by paying the energy company? There's no payment details on the credit style letter so I think the debt hasn't been passed to them, they've just been asked to send a letter?

I will call them on Monday and set up a direct debit to avoid this from now on, but can anyone reassure me until then? Panicking a little bit as this sort of thing makes me really anxious.

I believe it takes a couple of months for your credit rating to be updated so i reckon you are ok and you got to it quickly.

To be honest I would assume that's a scam. It's easy enough to find out which energy company someone is with. I note they have asked for your remittance so the credit company is asking you to pay them.

If there is no details on the letter which would suggest a genuine credit control letter (dates of statements, amounts owing, bill references) then I would suggest it is someone trying their luck.

Source - credit controller for nearly a decade.

Although a quick google suggests they may be genuine... so maybe ignore me.

Did you call your energy company to check if a bill was sent? I pay by direct debit monthly but use the app to provide regular meter readings so i know we are paying the right amount

dementedpixie · 27/01/2018 14:40

Doo they do live chat online at all?

OlBitey · 27/01/2018 14:59

after a hunt I've found the original bill hidden behind the TV by my flatmate, without telling me it had arrived Hmm and the amounts match up so it is genuine. Since I paid it today we were 5 days late paying the bill overall according to the original bill from the gas company.

Are you able to pay by direct debit? It'll be cheaper for you and ensure you're always up to date.

Do you have access to your credit file? Check if there's any late payments listed now and then check over the next month or two when it updates. If you get a late payment marker then you can asked the company to remove it in view of the fact you never received your bill.

Xpost. Give flat mate a kick but still follow the rest of my advice.

OlBitey · 27/01/2018 15:06

Thanks all! Yes I will call them on Monday and set up a direct debit while I'm at it
