How far back can you claim back packaged account charges?

This sounds very ridiculous, but I was mis-sold an account in my late teens/early twenties which would have been in the early noughties. I was told it would reduce my overdraft fees and I would get holiday insurance etc. I was not told there was a monthly fee and only discovered this a couple of years later on a bank statement. At the time I just put it down to being stupid and accepted it as my fault (I was young and not particularly confident challenging it with my bank), but now I'm wondering if it is possible to claim back after some 12-15 years since I cancelled it? I've had a look on a few sites and it doesn't give a specific time period that you can claim, but I've also seen that banks are only obliged to keep records for 10 years.

Anyone managed to do this for charges from this way back? I don't even have any idea on the exact dates I was signed up to the account.

Yes I claimed from 99/00 and was successful.
They didn't have any records to prove or disprove what I was saying.
Don't use one of these companies tho. Go on Martin Lewis website and there is an online link.
I claimed and received money back within the week

Last year I claimed packaged bank account fees back from an account I had in the late 90's using the Resolver website as recommended by someone on here, so it can be done.

I really recommend it and I wish I'd known about it when I claimed PPI back as well (don't work for them btw, just think it's a really good site).

Also, my account was with Natwest and I was a bit fuzzy about the dates too, but I still got a refund.

I would go through Resolver. Its been recommended on here a lot.

Thanks for your posts. It looks like it is worth pursuing. I did look at the resolver tool, but it was asking for specific dates, so thought I couldn't do it. I really have no idea about the dates and how long I paid the fee for. Does the bank keep records of what accounts you have had with them (as opposed to the actual statements?) I'm still with this bank but I won't be able to give them the specific dates. It could be anywhere between 2-4 years I was paying.

Can I also ask about PPI? I think I had this on a loan and phone contract, again during my early twenties. I had credit cards since, but my ex at the time said he didn't think the 'insurance' was worth the paper it was written on, so I probably opted out. I wasn't great with finances back then and never really did the maths! I was going to go to a PPI company to do the leg work as Orange (phone) and Egg (loan) no longer exist (not under those names anyway). Again the dates are really wooly here. The best I can do is say it was around the years 2000-2004!

Just contact bank direct. I had no idea I had loans or any ppi so I phoned them and asked them and they provided me with a list.

Just give them the info that you know and they will look at their files for you.

I've just had over £3k back from an AA loan I took out in 1996 and paid off in 2001, so def worth a go.
I had no dates, just a recollection of talking to their advisor on a summer's day, and I worked out what year it was from ds's age and when my maternity paid would have ended.

I've just got over £800 of Egg credit card PPI back via Resolver but mine was ported over to Barclarycard so it was quite straight forward. I think I had an Egg loan but I'm not 100%. Egg accounts that closed before October 2011 are dealt with by Citibank. I've decided to take a punt and have filled out the Citibank Egg PPI form online www.citibank.co.uk/personal/complaints-egg.do. It's probably worth a try by you first to save ending up paying fees to a PPI claims handler. It didn't ask for dates, just previous addresses.
