Keeping track of spending for analysis

I'm not in debt (apart from my mortgage) but I don't track my spending and I'd like to start. I'd particularly like to track what I spend on the big stuff so food, travel and holidays (we won't mention the clothes and shoes).

I've tried downloading a couple of apps in the past but found them difficult to use and I've noticed that both have now gone to the wall (iPhone v11 non-compatible).

any suggestions?

I've just started using HomeBudget to track spending. Liking it so far.

Thanks.

Ive started to use ‘Accounts’ which i already had on my phone and ghe Budget App in iPhone’s ‘Numbers’ App - both look good. Ive set daily reminders for completion too.

I just use a good old fashioned excel spreadsheet. Works for me.

If you pay for all these things on a credit card (get one that pays cashback, vouchers, airmiles etc) and pay it off in full every month, you can download the statements into spreadsheets and sort by category. I use Barclaycard and get 0.5% cashback.

Might not be 100% accurate, eg if you buy clothes in supermarkets, but it's a reasonable overview and you can tweak the amounts if you do buy your clothes in a supermarket.

Also has the advantage of earning cashback and gives protection if things go wrong - eg I got a refund and compensation for consequential losses (increased cost of more expensive replacement flights) from my credit card when Monarch went bust 2 days before we were due to fly with them.
