Hi- I have a tiny business - only earns about 20 to 25 k a year working at home.

I need to do a self assessment online by end of month, I found an accountant to help me work out the figures -

But now he's asked for my log in details to the gov gateway -so he can put the figures in for me,

This doesnt seem quite right to me somehow? shouldnt he be able to do it online himself but with HMRC knowing he is doing it?

thanks for the help!

You could authorise him as your agent but as you're literally days from the deadline this would take too long.

Was it login or just your UTR?

My DH is self employed and has an accountant. He normally does his own SA, but this year we both had to do one as had CGT to pay, which came from a compulsory share sale at my employer, based in USA. We decided to get the accountant to do both assessments so that we knew that the figures were correct, given that there was a currency conversion from the share sale.

He needed our UTRs, but not the actual login details - I assume accountants have their own logins. We also needed to sign an authorisation form.

I asked DH who does this for a living. He said he has only ever had to do it a few times, and usually in a case where there were only a few days to go before deadline, and whenever possible with the client present. He thought there would be enough time still to get a code through to do it properly.

Seems very strange to me. Most accountancy firms should be registered as agents and have their own agent number. They are then authorised to do self assessments for their clients.

I’ve done this before, never been a problem.

Odd that the accountant does not have a login and software?
I have used some of my clients logins to do other things
but for filing tax returns I never do it directly on the HMRC site - especially in January
