Why can't civil servants add up?

No, it isn't a joke, I really want to know.

I got a letter from pay section today telling me they overpaid me £387 and they were going to claim it back at around £65 a month from April.

We moved offices last year and were given an Excess Fares Allowance which I opted to have in a lump sum as it was just before Chrimbo, on the understanding that if I left I'd have to pay some back. I got just over £600. I've been given a temp promotion for 3 months in a different location so knew I'd have to pay back 3 months worth, even though it was spent yonks ago. So why are they claiming back almost £400? Because apparently, it came to light to day that I SHOULD have received over £800 last year and they miscalculated. Also, they can't add up and don't know what 3/12 of £600 is.

AND, they already took annual leave into account when they worked out my number of working days, but still want me to pay back the money for my month's annual leave prior to going on Maternity leave, even though my stint at the other office will officially be over.

Been on the phone all day to them and still none the wiser, except that I'm not paying anything back out of this month's pay as the letter I received today was actually dated 11th April - and they can't work out how much to tkae off me anyway.

Phew! Glad to get that out!
