Child Benefit

While recently talking with a friend who is a middle child in a family of 4, she was complaining that her youngest sibling was going to receive a lump sum from the government concerning child benefits. I can't remember the specifics of why, but it was something to do with her older sibling being of age that her parents were no longer eligible to receive child benefits for that particular child. I'm interested in how this could benefit me, but don't want to hassle my friend who isn't sure of the logistics or specifics of the situation. Sorry for being vague; any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's a bit hard to comment when we don't know the full details on why this lump sum was handed out?

I don't know of any lump sum scenario that would apply. But yes, nigh on impossible given what you've posted.

I think your friend may be talking about the child trust fund which was abolished a few years ago. DD was given £250 to put into a fund which we could top up. They can now be converted to child ISAs I believe.

But it's no longer offered.

Well thanks for the feedback everyone. When exactly was the child trust fund abolished? My friend was talking about this about a year ago.

about 7 years ago. DS was one of the last to get it

DS is ten and we got the first £250 then didn't get the next lot at age seven (I think)

Your friend will most likely be talking about child trust fund. I have 4 kids . The eldest two were born before it started o got nothing, ds3 received both payments ( one at birth and one aged seven so the full £500 ) and my youngest child just received the initial £250 and it was abolished before she turned seven ! We have had enough disposable income to make it fair so that all our kids get the same but yes it must seem unfair if one child in the family didn't qualify.
It was just another scheme by the labour government which lasted a few years and was then abolished.

It was abolished some years ago but your friends sibling has most likely just turned 18 when the young adult can access the money. It must seem grossly unfair for a sibling to be handed £500 at age eighteen purely on the basis of a government scheme which only lasted a few years.
