Would you cancel insurance?

H and I are separating and I've agreed to take the dogs, currently paying about $120 per month for insurance for both. Have hardly used the insurance so far and I wonder whether I'm better off putting the amount into savings as anything huge can be put on credit card if anything did happen. After outgoings I'm left with about $100 per fortnight 'spare', and that's without putting anything into savings so the cost would make a difference. Would you cancel it?

Our 7 yr old dog came down with bladder stones two weeks ago, no history of it, completely unexpected. the resulting treatment and surgery, post op care etc came to well over £1500. It would have been a nightmare without insurance. If you can avoid getting rid at all I would definitely hang on to it. It would be worth shopping around for a better deal though, you may well find the same cover cheaper with another company.

It’s up to you whether you want to “self insure”. As I’m sure you aware, no one had a crystal ball so can’t tell you what option will work out best in the long run.

Thanks for your replies. Shopping around is a good idea, I'll try that first.

Thanks.

Please be careful “shopping around” as a new insurance company won’t cover anything pre-existing. Even if you haven’t claimed for the problem, if it has been written in their notes at any point you won’t be covered. I’d ask your vets for advice before changing - they’ll deal with pet insurance on a daily basis, and be able to advise whether or not it would be a good idea to change.

Thanks - I've had a look and a new company now offers pet insurance at half the cost I'm paying now! They also may cover pre existing conditions if the vet can confirm it hasn't occurred for 18 months or more. I'll look into it and see if they'll cover as majority of the claims we have made have been from injuries rather than illnesses.
