Have I been overpaid?

This tax year I've been on ESA, JSA and have done voluntary work. I started a permanent full time role in November. My take home pay for the end of the month looked fine. This month we were paid early (yesterday) as it's Christmas, and the amount they've paid me is about one and a half times what I was expecting. I had systems issues yesterday and couldn't print my payslip, and was in meetings pretty much all day or I would have queried with HR. I've googled to no avail .... does anyone know if this is connected to my unused portion of personal allowance since 6 April?

I'm no expert but you may well have been on an incorrect tax code initially, which is now correct. Are either sums "right", ie what you were expecting?

HR will confirm it as soon as you're back at work - just don't spend it all at once if you think there is a chance there's actually an error 😜

I'd imagine you were on emergency tax last month, or missed a key payroll date so weren't paid for the full month (or a combination) and they've made the right adjustments this month.

Where are the differences between last months payslip and this months?

Lobsterquadrille2 · 23/12/2017 21:43

Thank you for replying. Yes, November's pay was exactly as expected, given that I started mid month, which is why December's pay really surprised me - yes, I'm working under the assumption that I'll have to pay it back and will be contacting HR when I am back on Wednesday. My net actual pay is higher than my gross pay, which just seems weird.

The difference between November and December's pay was £1,809 and I started on 6th November (payroll is to month end).

If bet pay is higher then it probably is a tax rebate.

Merryoldgoat · 24/12/2017 12:14

What was your tax code last month? Did it have an L1 or M1 after it?

SouthWestmom · 24/12/2017 12:23

Op are you earning a massive amount?

I'm just jealous!

If the difference is 1809, and that makes it 1.5 times what you should have got, do you earn 3600 and got 5400?

Can't see that being a tax error?

Hauntedlobster · 24/12/2017 12:27

Could they have paid you for Nov too by accident? If you do g have payslip how do you know net is higher than gross? Do you have expenses?

Lobsterquadrille2 · 24/12/2017 14:43

Thank you very much for all replies. I'm on £55k a year. So about £3,300 a month - as I started on November 6th, when I was paid £2,979.79 at the end of November, I didn't even check my (electronic) payslip as it looked fine. On Friday I received £4,788.86 for December. I couldn't access the system for most of the day - when I did manage to get in briefly, I could see that the gross was fine but then the deductions included a negative figure so that was added onto the gross. I had no printer access either. Obviously on Wednesday when I am back, I can print out my payslip and investigate with HR if anyone is in. In the meantime I thought I'd ask on here ...... I am pretty sure that my tax code is 1150L.

Could have been a Christmas bonus?

TheIntrovertedMum · 24/12/2017 15:14

Sorry didn't read the thread before I posted. I used to get minus figures on my pay slips when I was on maternity leave. It was because I had already paid the full amount of tax for the period before I was on mat leave so they rebated me for the rest of the tax year
