Can I cash cheque written to maiden name?

GingerbreadMa · 18/12/2017 21:25

Elderly relative who would be embarrassed if told:
Cheque written to (husband's first name) & (my first name) (my maiden name)
What are the chances of lodging it if I bring in my marriage cert?
Slim?
Anyone tried?

Should be fine with your passport and marriage certificate.

singme · 18/12/2017 21:29

Fine with marriage cert. I had the opposite problem (cheque in married name but haven't changed it). As it was a small amount they let me cash it.

happylantern · 18/12/2017 21:37

My bank wouldn't let me cash one that's written to Mr & Mrs X as we don't have a joint account. I have changed my surname though so I thought they'd let one of us pay it into our own account Confused

My bank cashed one made out to my first name and dps surname. We have a joint account, but aren't married. Check with your bank. The manager at mine was able to use their discretion. I think it depends on the amount - £40 probably not an issue, £4000 might be more difficult.

BerylStreep · 18/12/2017 21:46

I've done it before by bringing in my marriage certificate. Manager queried it, and I asked him what part of the LEGAL document that was a marriage certificate he had an issue with. I think he thought I was just going to be too much bother so cashed it Grin

Okay so mixed bag, worth a try then! Thanks.

I did with a marriage cert

Ta1kinPeace · 19/12/2017 14:48

Depends on how long ago you got married.
I have accounts in both my names just to be sure

sausagerollsrock · 19/12/2017 14:51

I was allowed to cash on cheques in maiden name for 6 months after changing name.

SpadesOfGlory · 19/12/2017 14:59

I wasn't allowed to lodge a cheque in my maiden name at the desk less than a week after changing my account to my married name with the same cashier who remembered me ...however, the cashier told me if it was for less than £1000 I could do it myself at the self pay in machines and no one would check it Hmm

GingerbreadMa · 19/12/2017 16:11

We're married so long that most people who know me now dont even know my maiden name lol

Ta1kinPeace · 19/12/2017 17:04

Ah, you may have a problem.
I got told by a bank that my marriage certificate was "out of date" Grin

GingerbreadMa · 19/12/2017 17:06

Lol, Ill tell DH hes out of date so no longer my husband LOL

So it’s got your husbands first name and your maiden name? Not your first name?

I worked in a bank and wouldn’t of touched it

specialsubject · 19/12/2017 17:12

I also had the opposite problem - relative assumed name change so cheque made out to non existent person. Marriage cert isnt proof of name as never been a requirement to do that. Joint account worked.

Your problem is that the person concerned also doesnt exist.

GingerbreadMa · 19/12/2017 18:53

Myfathervismyking:
Its got both of our first names and my maiden name.

OP posts:
GingerbreadMa · 19/12/2017 18:55

Yes my husbands first name & my maiden name doesnt exist and probably never has (its an unusual surname)

YesThisIsMe · 19/12/2017 18:57

I have relatives who do this. Fortunately the name they write it out to is my DMIL’s actual (married) name so I give her the cheque to pay in and she gives me the cash. Not a solution for everyone though - you’ll have to take in all your paperwork and beg.

allthegoodnamesalreadytaken · 19/12/2017 18:57

My bank would only let me do it for the first 6 months after marriage with a marriage certificate. After that it was a non starter and had to get the person to issue a new cheque

GingerbreadMa · 19/12/2017 18:57

Its written in this format:
John and Catherine Filofax (if filofax was an unusual surname that didnt out me..couldnt think of a proper example lol)

I'm with Santander their rule is six months after changing your name with them

VivaLeBeaver · 19/12/2017 21:05

Barclays say six months. Or at least they did when I had this issue ages ago.

GU24Mum · 22/12/2017 20:52

I changed my name with my bank about 13 years ago but as I previously had an account in my maiden name, they'll cash a cheque - also from an aged relative!

scrabbler3 · 27/12/2017 23:30

I just used the self service machine and hoped no one checked it. They didn't.
