ADVICE ON PASSPORT-HELP PLEASE!!!!!!

worried222 · 22/04/2007 11:31

i am a lone parent to a 6 yr old dd.
her passport is going to expire on April 29.
we broke up with her father because of domestic violence where i pressed charges and went to court and he was fined.
this happened 4 years ago.
after that i applied for her residence through courts and her residence was given to me.
her father is on birth certificate so he has still parental responsibility i guess.
after we broke up we had 1 year injuction where he couldnt come near to me and her.
i have a few questions, and i am worried.
-does residence order mean custody of child?
-when i renew her passport will i need his consent again?---THATS THE MAIN WORRY FOR ME.
i dont know where he lives, and i dont want thim to know where we live.
he hasnt seen her child since domestic violence.
-another question is; what will be done?
her actual passport will be renewed or they will do a new passport book?
HELP PLEASE!!!
thank you in advance.

I don't actually know the answer to most of your qs, but if you pick up a passport application form from the PO, you can have a look and check whether or not it requires both parents signatures.

if not - no problem!

This factsheet from Gingerbread is helpful - look at legal issues - & it also has links to the passport office site & their own website, as well as a phone number.

I've got the forms as I've just applied for dd's first passport; they are pretty confusing but it does seem that only one parent's permission is required. It DOES say that you must send in any court orders relating to the child, but then later on it says for renewals that no supporting documents are required. They will send a new passport-- you send the old one with the application and they cancel it and send it back to you.

Advice line is 0870 521 0410, they can probably be a bit more helpful. Good luck!

thanks very much.
do i have to do the renewal rightaway before it expires on April 29, or do i have time?

~I have just applied for my DD passport and although I included DH details I was the only one who actually signed anything

Hope that helps

frankielamb · 22/04/2007 12:20

you dont have to renew right away, but dont leave it too long. you will need a new photograaph. just renewed my ds passport it had run out on 24 march. If you take all your forms to the po they will check it all for a small fee and guarentee it to be right. Only need one parents signature, but not sure about your other legal stuff PO might know when they check it.!! Good luck are you planning to go somewhere nice!!!

Right ok first off your ex wont automatically have pr from being named on the birth certificate,it changed a couple of years back but going by your dd age he wont have automatic pr.
Yes as far as i know a residence order means you have custoday of the said child.
you wont need his consent for a new passport for your dd ,i have 3 kids and am a single parent,i got them passports a couple of years back and only filled in my details, and was given the passports no probs.

Worried..i have just applied for my three dd's passports/ The two eldest are from a former relationship..I didn't even have to put their fathers details down if i didn't want to..just my own and ,my passport number.

I ahve all three passports back within 10 days from sending ( via post post office service).

Good Luck!

worried222 · 22/04/2007 16:11

thank you mumto3girls.
i read somewhere that countersignature is required on the form and the photograph if child's appearance has changed.
dd's appearance changed and i will have to have her new passport photo taken.
who does this countersignature?

mumto3girls · 22/04/2007 16:13

Well, I understood that it was a GP. HV, teacher, Nursery nurse, policeman or any other professional who has known YOU not your dd for 2 yrs or more.

worried222 · 22/04/2007 16:19

do they renew it only for 5 years?
can we do it for example for 10 years?

OP posts:
worried222 · 22/04/2007 16:21

maybe these are written on forms.
i will get a form tomorrow and see.
thanks a lot really to everyone who read and answered me.

A child's passport is only for 5 years..( bit annoying as just paid for my 15 yr olds...one more year and she could have had a 10 yr)

worried222 · 22/04/2007 16:25

maybe its because their appearance change when they are child.

OP posts:
Kaleidoscope · 22/04/2007 16:26

dont worry, only you need to sign and this is a renewal, not a new application anyway, get a new photo taken and get one of the school teachers to sign it, they must have known you, not your child for at least 2 years and must be uk passport holders themselves, failing that, the local vicar can do it, or the pharmacist, or the gp, but they usually charge.

Lolly68 · 24/04/2007 09:53

Were you married? If not, then you only need Mother's consent.

worried222 · 24/04/2007 10:17

we were married but we got divorced Lolly68 . i have her custody.

OP posts:
Lolly68 · 24/04/2007 11:42

Then you dont need permission. Just apply with your details on the form.

Kelly1978 · 24/04/2007 11:45

I'm divorced and I never needed to have permission or anything from my exh, and I don't even have a custodial order, so you should be fine.
