Car insurance for new driver

DD has just passed her test (hurray!) She won't have her own car. She is now keen to start 'sharing' my car. What is the best way to get her on the insurance? As a named driver? Or should she have completely separate insurance?

I'd go with a named driver. It's appropriate in the situation and much cheaper that taking out another insurance (if that's even possible).

If she driving your car then yes, she will be a named driver. She won’t build up her own no claims, but unless she’s the main driver on her own car, there’s not much you can do about that.

PS depending on what model your car is, it may be cheaper to buy her a small car of her own, rather than add her on as an additional driver on yours (if yours is a larger engine ect)

I don't think adding her as a named driver will be that pricey necessarily. I've been driving for 15 years but I'm a horrible driver and thr longest I've gone without an accident is 18 months. DH added me as a named driver on his very expensive new car and the annual insurance still only came to £280/year.

My DDs car is insured through Ingenie
the tracker means that the premium is not bad at all

It depends - if she is the main driver then she must be named as such. Depending on the car it can be cheaper to get a smaller run around and add you onto her own insurance.
The benefit of doing the latter is she builds up her own no claims discount.
I have a cousin the same age as me - he did the former and I did the latter. His was initially cheaper than mine, but by the time he got his own car and policy five years later mine was about a quarter of his.
There are policies that offer named drivers no claims discounts but often it's not transferable to another company.

DD, 18, passed earlier in the year. She has a car that is hers to drive (cost all of £500). The extra cost of insurance was only ~£600 on our Admiral multi-car policy. But she's working not a student so may be seen as a better bet.

I could not insure my kids on either mine or DH's cars
so they have a runabout with the tracker in
