Minor money question - selling on forums

I've sold a number of things on here, and bought quite a few more. Apart from being a little dense when it comes to checking messages, I like to think I'm fairly honest, and my ebay feedback is spot on, too.

I've sold some items to a person, and they contacted me to say they hadn't arrived. I always get proof of postage, so I filed a claim with Royal Mail but it's dragged on a bit (you have to wait 15 working days, then fill out a form, then post it etc etc, I know it's not exactly rocket science but I moved house in the middle of it too.)

I've just checked my email since moving and have a number of increasing shirty emails (reasonably understandable I feel) but I haven't heard anything from Royal Mail as of yet.

The person is insisting I refund immediately, but I'm a tad wary. I'd love to just say yeah sure, I trust you, but I don't know them from Adam.... I'm not an untrusting person so it's not sitting well with me though. Isn't the point of proof of posting/claiming through royal mail just verifying the item never showed up? I understand they need the money but not everyone is 100% honest...

Can you give the person the reference number of your proof of posting and get them to chase their local post office as well? Remember that, while the person might be cross, you haven't actually done anything wrong and you're entitled to want to wait till the post office actually admit having lost the item and/or deliver it to one of you.
