M&S food - is it expensive?

Is M&S food as expensive as I think it is? I went in the other night to grab something for dinner that night (I'm not very good at preplanning meals as I often work late). And I was surprised that I could get good food, for not too expensive.
Does anyone shop their regularly?
Are there good deals to be had?
Or am better to look elsewhere? Where?

only shopped in M&S food a couple of times and never again - some of the worst quality food and lots of short expiry dates - learned the 2nd time they don't reduce so be aware.

much prefer other shops - hell would have to be freezing over for me to shop their again, would even choose the shithole that is asda ahead of M&S

Think the dine in offers are good plus some meat offers

BarbaraofSevillle · 14/11/2017 18:52

M&S do reduce. I've had loads of great reductions from there. DP works away a lot in the summer and when I'm only feeding myself I live almost entirely on what I can find reduced in there as I pass a newly opened store on the way home from work and it took them a while to get their stock control right.

PickAChew · 14/11/2017 18:57

Er, they do reduce. I walk past a markses on my way home from dropping ds2 off, most days and often pick up something yellow stickered for my lunch.

Did a big shop at bonanza time, on Friday. Had to be restrained because I'm running my freezer down, at the moment.

local foodhall does reductions at least twice a day from what I have seen. Pretty good ones too.

Great reductions on their meat I find, that's with it. When they have a large chicken on 2 dine in for £10 it's great as the chicken serves 4, you get a bottle of their sparkling wine which is £6.99 itself and a side and a pudding. Chicken lasts 3 of us 2 meals. Also they now do steak etc on that offer which makes it well worth it. The 3 for £10 meat offer can be great when they have a pack of 20 sausages, mince and chicken thighs on it. And in general they just have so many nice bits and bobs around to add to meals, interesting veg etc. I mainly shop at ASDA and Aldi but will pop in there about once a week for a few bits too. They have amazing wine and beer although it's not cheap.

My DS accidentally called if Marks Expensive when he was learning to talk and it’s stuck for us!

Generally they have decent quality stuff and although some is comparable a like for like shop would work out costly. Without a doubt.

SingaSong12 · 14/11/2017 19:17

I like fruit from Marks. It's more expensive but I find I eat it all.

Frouby · 14/11/2017 19:22

I go once a fortnight atm for the 2 dine in for £10. It's pretty good value especially if they include a chicken in it.

I usually get 2. One main with 2 sides for me and dp for Saturday tea. Then the chicken for sunday and just buy normal veg. So for about £30 I can get 2 meals, 2 bottles of wine and 2 lots of desserts. I usually get 3 for £7 I think it is on the deli deal. So some naice picky bits and maybe a quiche.

The prices for a weekly shop would be a dear do. But it's good for a weekend top up shop. And the yellow stickers can be a bargain too. The pizzas are nice and some of the bakery bits are reasonable too.

I don’t think Sainsbury’s quality is anywhere near M and S standards , yet not significantly cheaper. I go fir Marks for quality, choice and original lines. Wouldn’t buy my loo roll from there etc. but for quality foodstuffs definitely ( fruit and veg more expensive but never any waste)

Creambun2 · 14/11/2017 19:30

Mini colin catterpillar cakes are horrid

ZenNudist · 14/11/2017 20:23

I did shop there a lot. giving up as of now

Just got home to discover fish bought at 3pm on sunday was dated sunday no yellow sticker, full price. And lamb bought at same time dated today. So my meal planning for the week is stuffed.

They are terrible at short dating food. I never order online and always rifle at the back to get the freshest stuff. Seems that my sunday quck shop was not as organised as id like.

I think its expensive so i usually send dh as hes spendthrift. I get bogged down thinking "i could make this better myself and much more for less". Ready meals are very salty as youd expect.

I like the quality of the veg and the pre-prepared food, much nicer than aldi, not much better than Sainsburys. So im just goibg to buy from there from now on.

I am also put off as i have 3 locally but one is always understocked, one is at a huge shopping centre thats not suitable for a big shop, and my fave has just had an aldi open nextdoor and car park is gridlocked whenever i want to go. 😡

Cakescakescakes · 14/11/2017 20:29

I agree the fruit is really really excellent. It is much much tastier than Tesco (therefore all gets eaten every week) and is only slightly more expensive especially if you get the 2 for £4 offers etc. But considering none goes to waste I think it’s actualy a better buy.

eloisesparkle · 14/11/2017 20:39

Ttbb
They don't price match in Dublin.** Sad
Their fruit is an horrific price.
For example - blueberries 2 punnets for €5.50 or 1 punnet for an astronomical price.
In Tesco and Aldi they are €1.79 per punnet.

cathyclown · 14/11/2017 20:48

Marks and Waitrose prices will not bother a certain cohort of shopper.

Everyone else should go to Aldi. And don't be moaning now. Either you can afford it or you are chasing a cheapo. I am being ironic here just in case.

Anyway, I do love M+S meal deals, their extra mature cheddar, their corned beef slices (total yum and so bad for me) and so many other things, that once a month or so I pig out and just buy the bloody stuff and enjoy.

I'll be dead far longer than I will have been alive and the savings by denying myself this treat will result in sadness. LOL.
