Do SOs take preference over DDs.

As in the title- will a standing order be paid by the bank in preference to a DD?
For background, had a large car bill and now a little short.
rent and council tax go out by SO tomorrow, and various other things by DD, this may tip me into a minus figure by £10/£15- so if anything is going to go unpaid I would rather it was my pension contribution, rather than my rent!

Do you know anyone who could stick £15 in there for a few days?

IamScarfaceClaw · 01/10/2017 20:48

Yeah I will ask my sister, but she may not be able to until first thing (doesn’t use online banking and would need to visit a branch Confused) so I would imagine I will get one of those ‘payment bounced- we will try again in a few hours/tomorrow’ messages- but as I said in my OP- I’d rather anything but my rent bounced back, so curious if anything takes preference.

Why don't you log into your online banking and cancel the standing order?

MyBrilliantDisguise · 01/10/2017 20:49

You can't usually do that last thing, can you?

IamScarfaceClaw · 01/10/2017 20:49

Because the things that go out by standing order- rent and council tax- are the most important payments, everything else could wait a few days!

Which last thing? Disguise

Sorry, I meant you can't cancel at the last moment, can you? The money is usually booked out.

Can you look at your bank account and see what money you have available? In TSB it tells you the balance (which would include all the rent etc) and then what you can take out (which would take away all the bills.)

IamScarfaceClaw · 01/10/2017 21:28

Hmm my online banking stills shows the full ‘available balance’, not taking into account the SO or DDs, so after a pen and paper income vs expenditure I have cancelled a DD so hopefully that will make the numbers balance- I just hope the cancellation was instant?!

That's all you can do, isn't it? When will you be able to pay the DD?

IamScarfaceClaw · 01/10/2017 21:36

Its voluntary contributions to a workplace pension so I will just set it up again for next month, no real damage! Thanks for your help, I’m still curious about the original question but guess I won’t find out!!

You could phone the bank - they should be open until 10, shouldn't they?

MinorRSole · 01/10/2017 21:43

Most banks will retry a direct debit in the afternoon giving you until about 3ish to deposit extra money.

Not sure about order of direct debits/standing orders but have a hunch they will take dds first. Might be worth remembering you can change the date of a standing order very easily with online banking so could just move in to Tuesday

Depends on the bank but it's not always a case of DDs over SOs or vice versa.

Some systems look at the number and value of payments to work out which to pay. You usually get until around 3pm to deposit sufficient funds before any payment is returned.
