I need to take a faulty top back to shop but don't have receipt.....where do I stand?

I bought a top from Evans about two weeks ago. Wore it once and washed it according to instructions. It's a black and white top and the black colour seems to have run into the white so I need to return it. Problem is I threw the receipt away.
I guess I won't get a full refund now. Will I be able to get exchange or vouchers?

I am not a lawyer but I think you could claim that this top was not fit for the purpose for which it was sold and you can therefore ask for your money back as a statutory right.

In practice though you might have more success asking for an exchange as they will probably try to argue that you can't have washed it in accordance with the instructions.

Incidentally, if you don't have a receipt it can be worth taking in a credit card bill or whatever you bought the top with to prove that you bought it recently and paid the full price for it.

A receipt is useful of evidence as to where and when you bought something. However, it is not a pre-requisite to getting an exchange or refund. If the top is obviously from Evans, they will not be able to dispute where you purchased it.

Take it back. Explain what happened and see what they say.

also did u pay by card?

if so the bank statement or credit card statement is proof of purchase.

top is not fit for purpose so you should eb able to claim a full refund, so long as the price of the top hasnt now gone down. with a proof of purchase you will be able to get back the price you paid

Okay, I stopped working at Evans a couple of years ago now, but standard procedure used to be that you could get a refund on a faulty item without a receipt as long as the fault was genuine. My advice would be to go into the store and ask an assistant about it. If you have any bank statement etc. that would be excellent as they have computerised records of all sales in the office that they can access (they don't like doing it because it eats time, but they can do it, trust me, I've had to often enough). The statement will also help them determine the actual price of the item when you bought it.

Most of all, please don't throw receipts away, they make life easier for you and the poor schmuck behind the counter

Just to let you know I was given a full refund with no hesitation. They did offer me the choice to choose an alternative item or a gift card at first but I requested I had a full refund.
Thanks for your comforting advice everyone.
