Best way of selling diamond engagement rings?

Finally getting round the monetizing the disaster that was exH...and want to get a good price as am giving it all to DD at Uni as the start of a nest egg for flat deposit. None of the jewellers near me seem to buy jewellery and not sure I'd get a great price on eBay. Has anyone done this successfully? It's a Niessing tension ring, £5k new, 0.5ct diamond.

I found this place online in Birmingham...but just worried it might be a bit of a 'cash for gold' outfit?

Unfortunately you'll probably get very, very little.

I sold my ring about 5 years ago, was £1500 ish from memory, got £130.

Oh dear...what price love, eh Wink

Engagement rings are worth nothing compared to the original price

Nobody wants that negative connectation (vintage is different)

I used them and got a better price with them (2,500) than my local jewellers quoted (2,000), but it was much less than the orgInal cost of the ring (about a quarter of the price) and I think I got that amount due to the diamond which had a certificate, not the ring IYSWIM... however the money went a long way to pay for my divorce.

Thanks storm, that's reassuring. I've got the GIA certificate so 25% is better than 0%...

Have you considered putting it in a pendant or sth and giving to your daughter? Could make a nice, meaningful present for her 21st birthday.

The reason I'm mentioning it, is that a 0.5 carat top quality diamond with GIA certification can be purchased for under 2k new (D-E colour, flawless and perfectly cut). I understand that there's a premium associated with the brand (although not sure about this brand being that valued in the UK). Whichever way that 25% of value is calculated, it probably wouldn't be 25% of 5k - maybe 25% of 2.5k. Hence I am not convinced that it makes sense to sell.

Good idea to make it into a pendant. Or you could try a reputable auction house. I don't think I'd sell for a fraction of the price unless I was absolutely desperate for the money.

Yes, maybe I could have it restyled into a sort of 'we survived' necklace for DD! Tbh though I just want it away. Bad memories, for us both. Would be lovely for her to spend whatever money we get on something nice for the future like part of a deposit or towards a Masters or something.

I've emailed the WP Diamond dealers with a copy of the certificate so will report back as to what % they suggest. Have also seen a German company offering a Buy It Now deal of 50% of the insurance value for an almost identical second hand ring on eBay, so maybe worth a shot...

I am selling an unworn Tiffany mans gold wedding band on behalf of someone else, it was approx £1700 and I have been trying on eBay for months and no luck. Gold isn't worth that much and really the original cost was because of the Tiffany name. But original owner doesn't want to deal with it because of negative memories - as an unworn, brand new wedding band would have for a person!! Seems as though jewellery like this doesn't have a good resale value....

stinkingbishop · 20/09/2017 19:49

Well, WP Diamonds gave it a rough estimate of £900. So around 20% original value. Harrumf. Going to try on eBay...

Or maybe I should just do a Dr Foster on them Grin

Sound a little more than I was expecting. Hopefully, if you can eBay it directly, you'll get a bit more.

Vic98765 · 27/09/2017 15:57

Hi, from similar experience you won;t get a massive amount.

Just be sure you get paid properly otherwise you'll have no ring and no money either.

Good luck!
