Payment of mortgage

Me and 'dh' have separated. He has been paying the mortgage on the house we own together (he moved out; I stayed here with kids) up until now.

He's now asking that I set up the mortgage payment from my bank account as opposed to him paying it monthly.

I guess my question is ... would the mortgage company just accept this switch? They gave us the mortgage based on his salary (I don't think I was working st the time). Would they make me undergo a reassessment of financial viability? Does being separated change anything (he's still on the deeds and is making me a payment each month for share of bills, etc).

Sorry if this sounds naive - am pretty hopeless re knowledge of this area

You can change the direct debit to anyone's account. As long as it's being paid it doesn't matter who is doing it. If you default however it's a joint mortgage so it's joint responsibility. The bank will come after both of you to make the payments, reagardless of who was earning what on the application.

If you want to switch the mortgage and property deeds into your sole name, taking off your ex and putting full responsibility on you, then that's another matter. You will need to complete a transfer of equity and the lender will assess the application on your sole earnings. A solicitor also needs to get involved to amend the deeds.

Thanks - that's really useful.
