Does anyone pay sky insurance?

I'm currently sat in numbers up to my eyeballs trying to cut down my budget. I currently pay £11.99/month for sky insurance which covers call out fees and repairs etc. I've never had to use it in the 5ish years I've been with sky. Just wondering if other sky users pay this/would advise carrying on with it?

Ouch!! That's ridiculous

Never needed to, if I've ever had a problem I've threatened to cancel and they've always sorted it for free

I tend not to get insurance like that on things. In the years you pay out you could have saved up enough to fix most things! Do you pay for warranties on anything else as they can sometimes be a good saving?

TheKidsAreTakingMySanity · 01/09/2017 21:34

Nope. If my sky box breaks it's maybe £20 for a second hand one from an FB sales site. Or, even better, call them up to cancel because your box is broken, they'll bend over backward to keep your custom. We recently called to cancel as we found out we were paying £15 more a month than new customers and that was for simple sky+ whereas new customers could have the new SkyQ. They matched it and SkyQ was installed for just £20 and our bill was £13.50 less a month.

Thekids that's interesting - I'm planning on calling them to downgrade anyway because I'm currently paying an obscene amount and I just can't justify it! I figure if I downgrade I can use that to go towards starting savings as I currently live paycheque to paycheque which is something I'm trying to move away from.

In that case I will cancel that insurance and put that money towards it too - thanks all!

Definitely cancel it, I've just helped a family member with finances and that's one of the first things I did - also got £35 per month off their bill by adjusting package. I never even had it when I had Sky. Sky only do their Q boxes now so if yours broke (if you don't have one of them already) they would have to provide new one. You can always tell them you're going to another provider (I did and actually left and went to BT for TV, phone and broadband saved nearly £50 per month) I actually had to tell them to cancel before they contacted me to try and negotiate, they wouldn't budge for the sake of £5 so i left. Now, customer service wise BT were a nightmare, but I can't fault the price, TV package we have is more than adequate for what we watch even with 2 DC and broadband is brilliant. I recently ordered a second box which I got for nothing, got a discount on my broadband package so actually paying no more per month with a second box. I was paying £10 for multiroom with Sky !! Sky never give you any offers, and everything is aimed at new customers. BT do send offers to existing customers, we've had a few, it's a pity their customer service level is not as good as this lol !!

NEVER EVER pay for those sort of insurances / extended warranties
they are all a con

if you are of a worrying nature, "self insure"
ie put that sum aside in a savings account for when things go wrong
and pay cash when they do

car recovery - I pay £45 a year to Autoaid - covers two people and three cars : RAC lowest quote was £200 for the same service

boiler service cover - again a con : save the money and hire and independent plumber every third year

the GOOD thing is to add accidental damage onto your home insurance (for me it was £24 extra a year)
and cancel all the other silly policies

MrGrumpy01 · 03/09/2017 22:53

We had it years ago but stopped it when finances changed. We have never needed them in years. The only thing that has happened is i had to buy a new remote.

WatchingFromTheWings · 03/09/2017 23:11

I've never paid insurance for a skybox. If my box breaks I'll be phoning them to ask for a new one. If I don't get one I'd just cancel the contract!

If you're trying to make savings tell them you can't afford to keep Sky either. I did that and they pretty much halved what I was paying!

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/09/2017 13:09

Just go the whole hog and cancel Sky - very expensive way to watch TV.

Your box will work as a free sat box and then get Now TV, which is £8 pm for box sets and most of the channels not on freesat. Loads of second hand boxes available cheaply if it breaks.

You can save more by getting introductory packs with a box and 3 or 6 months service or threaten to cancel to get a discount. We've had Now TV for about 3 years and have paid full price for less than 6 months of that. The rest of the time, it's been between £1 and £4 pm.

I've had sky forever, never paid it, never needed it its a con.

cozietoesie · 04/09/2017 20:30

I had Sky for about 12 years. Never paid for insurance and never needed it. And then I cancelled Sky. Grin
