Ironing charges

Hi,
So I have a minore issue, but wanted some advice.
Ive recently taken on some ironing work from a lovely lady. Only problem is that she gives me a large storage bag full of items and pays very little. For example, she has sent me today, a bag full with no less than 100 items. This includes 8 items of bedding (kingsizes and singles sheets/covers). I have created a price list per item according to the average charges online. For this bundle, that makes it £80+!! She obviously refused to pay that much. But this is many many hours work. What would you say was a good price to accept for this amount??
Many thanks xxx

Work out how much you want per hour and then how many hours it will take you.

bimbobaggins · 29/08/2017 20:37

I pay a £ 16 for 30 items including pick up and delivery. Bedding counts as two items.
I'd say £ 50
I wouldn't pick someone who charged per hour because they could be the worlds slowest ironer. Much better to do it in bundle sizes
I.e. Up to 15 items
Up to 30, etc. Any ironing place I have used does it in bundles rather than per item

I pay £20 for a 60l bin bag of clothes, mostly DP's suit trousers and shirts so lots of creasing and faffing about.

Viviennemary · 29/08/2017 20:50

£80 does sound an awful lot of money. My local laundrette has an ironing price list. Duvet £2 King size duvet £2.50 to quote a couple. . I think that's very reasonable. How many hours work roughly. Then say £8 - £10 an hour would be fair.

I'm not suggesting the OP charges her per hour directly, I'm just saying she should apply it to work out a rate in advance.

cheesypastatonight · 29/08/2017 20:59

You should have agreed a price in advance. Or decide one now before you start.
No point her expecting a tenner and you wanting £80!

Just looked up Johnson's Dry Cleaners for their prices:

Ironing is charged per item at between £2 and £6 depending on the size and number of items,

Please make sure that your garments are not too wet or scrunched up as we may have to re-wash or tumble dry your clothes and this will incur an additional charge.

There is a HUGE difference in time between ironing a duvet cover that's just come out of the dryer and one that's been scrunched up at the bottom of a basket for six months.

MickeyLuv · 30/08/2017 08:50

My local ironing person charges £20 per basket of 30 items. You haven't said how much your client is paying but it doesn't sound like she is paying anywhere near the going rate. You need to agree priced with her before you do anymore!

GU24Mum · 30/08/2017 22:27

...... and I'd far rather iron 30 t-shirts than 30 duvet covers so I think if you are going for a bundle, perhaps that should exclude difficult items which you can charge for individually?

Kimlek · 25/09/2017 09:33

An ironing lady near me advertises £6.50 per kg. That would be more accurate than per item - 3 t-shirts versus 3 duvet covers! I'd call her now and let her know that there's a 100 items and had she realised that's going to cost £80 and is she happy for you to go ahead? She may be fine with it and realise it's a ton of work!!

Hi... I have just started an ironing service and wondered if anyone could give me some advice as to where you buy the wire hangers and polythene covers in bulk?
Many thanks Elphaba

bimbobaggins · 15/11/2018 23:03

I’ve just googled it and i see you can get both on amazon to get you started.
Good luck with your venture. I see I have commented on this thread previously so I must like ironing threads.
We need to provide our own hangers so perhaps you could suggest that to your customers
