I'm rubbish at writing letters - I just need a short polite note saying thank you for being such a good tenant but that I need to move back into my house so please can he move out... This is his two months notice.

How do I phrase it nicely but professionally?

TIA

i think its more complicated legally than that?

actually a notice to quit has to be a prescribed form and contain certain info for it to be valid. i would make sure you get it right or he will be under no obligation to leave.

How is it more complicated?

Our contract says that he needs to give me 1 months notice if he wants to move out and I have to give him 2 months when I want him to move out...

because when a 'tenancy' is created the tenant has certain rights that go along with that whether or not they are in the contract that you have between you. it's not massively more complicated but worth doing properly if you do not want problems further doen the line. most tenants don't know their rights any better than the landlords do and just move out anyway. however some will decide to assert their rights and you will have problmes if you haven't given the proper notice in the right way.

As vitomum says it needs to be in a prescribed form to be valid.

Google 'Notice Requiring Possession' and I am sure you will find an example.

you need specific legal advice - i dont know about private rented but i work for a HA and know that unless we do things specifically the resident doesnt have to leave.

yes the resident can give us notice - or not even give us notice - however as the landlord we are taking a home off someone ( as you will be doing) this is very serious. and can have serious consequences for the person renting - as such there are more legal obligations for the landlord

i dont know the specifics but i would get legal advice
