How long does anyone keep their payslips?
Do you get rid of them as soon as a P60/P45 has come through?

I kept my first one - forever.

But generally, yes, I keep them til the P60 is through.

I'm sure I'm way ott but I've kept every payslip that has pension contributions made. I just don't trust them to calculate it correctly when the time comes. I want to be able to prove the contributions were made and when.

I get mine electronically now which is soooo much better. I cleaned out DHs office desk a few weeks ago and I swear there was ten years worth. Totally OTT. I have suggested six months to him which is what our last mortgage lender wanted you see.

xyz you are probably sensible!! I'm of an age where I have friends disputing their pension forecast - but of course they have no wage slips or P60s.

adviceadviceasvice · 17/08/2017 20:35

I think i have about 10 years worth. I just dont feel right shredding them

Nix32 · 18/08/2017 06:51

I keep them all for pension reasons too.

Hunkle · 18/08/2017 06:53

If you sign up on Gov.uk, you can see every single yearly income from a long way back. Mine go back 20 years on there.

It might even be monthly.

LadyWithLapdog · 18/08/2017 07:05

I've kept all mine (since 1994) for pension purposes.

pullingmyhairout1 · 18/08/2017 07:11

I would suggest keeping at least one financial year.

I chuck mine every six financial years.

WatchingFromTheWings · 18/08/2017 07:15

I've got all of mine from current and previous job.....10 years worth in all. No idea why! Confused

SamPotatoes · 18/08/2017 07:16

A few years ago DH got a letter from HMRC highlighting that he had several years around 10 years ago where he hadn't paid NI and asked if he wanted to make voluntary contributions. As he had payslips for his job 10 years previously he was able to prove he had been working. Turned out the company had made an error in his NI number and his contributions had been allocated to someone else. With the payslips HMRC were able to mend the hole in his contribution records.

Thanks for all your comments. I think there are strong arguments there in favour of keeping P60s at least until retirement. I think I can shred the payslips once the P60 has arrived (and tax sorted if I ever need to do returns).
