Any tax experts please? PPI refund / R40 help.

I recently had a PPI claim that was successful. As it was through Natwest they automatically paid tax to HMRC. The company I used said if im not a tax payer I can claim it back and sent me a link to the R40 which I followed. I've since had it returned from HMRC as it was incomplete. The problem I have is I don't know what is incomplete. I can't see anywhere to add any figures. Haven't had any income or paid taxes and I can't see where I'd put PPI as an income (doesn't fit as income, benefit, trust etc). I can't get through to a human being on the phone at HMRC it's all computers.

Will they just automatically refund it at some point when they realise? Or do any of you know where I'd put PPI in the r40 form.
I am so dense with figures & forms.
Thanks

Was there not a cover letter with R40 when it was returned? If so are you ringing the number on that letter?

My DC got an inheritenace and some tax had been deducted from the estate before being split up. Since they aren't taxpayers, the solicitors statement said they could reclaim by filling in an R40. The form was returned for my son, saying 'he couldn't reclaim as hadnt paid any tax'. We rang the number on letter and explained the situation - they weren't fully understanding but told us to send it back with the solicitors statement.

When I did my daughters last year, I sent the statement to start with, even though the R40 specifically says not to!!

Can you ask at the Halifax if they can help you filling in the form?

I've had exactly the same and I've just had the tax back. Have you entered the figures under the chargeable gains section? (I think it's question 7.4 - 7.6).

The first time I put it in, I completely missed it and so didn't get the refund and had to complete it again.

I've just looked back at the scanned copy of my DDs R40.

Can you not add gross PPI and tax deducted in sections 7.4/7.5, with 'PPI refund' as description in 7.6. And if you have written details of PPi and tax, include a copy, regardless what their notes say.

At least if this is wrong, they may then tell you where the figures belong!!!

Don't forget to included bank details in section 11.

Thank you for the responses. Yes I tried the number on the covering letter.
I've just got the returned form in front of me - which in all honesty still looked like gobbledegook Confused. I've kind of cross referenced where 7.4/5/6 should be (no numbers on the copied form). My deductions lead me to the conclusion that would be under the heading of other income and benefits (which would be best fit). I think I will have to add a handwritten note explaining it as there isn't even space to write it in really. I'll also have to get my paperwork & calculated out as none of it was actually written down in the paperwork I received from the company I dealt with. Can't complain though - after all I got money Smile
Thanks again.

Can you do it online? That's what I did and had to do it twice but it's pretty much straightforward and you get a timeline telling you how they're dealing with it.

If you phone HMRC and explain it all, they should be able to tell you the problem but you'll be on hold for quite a while. Also, with regards to your refund calculations, did you not get a letter from Natwest with the breakdown?

MistyReturns · 08/08/2017 19:56

I did the original online & then received a letter by post. I'm a little unsure as to whether if I try again it will cock it all up.

No - absolutely no paperwork from natwest Shock. They've been shocking. I've got a horrible day tomorrow so nothing will happen. Then husband is back to work so I may be more able to spend time wandering around doing jobs whilst on hold to HMRC? If not I'll drop them a line. I honestly thought I was going insane. The form just seems so unuser friendly, but clearly others have had an issue so I feel slightly better!
