Good Gas Electric Deals atm?

Cailleach666 · 02/08/2017 20:25

I am trying to find a good fixed deal for dual fuel- my current tariff ends in 6 weeks.
Everywhere seems a lot more expensive than I am paying- any ideas?

I have had good deals in the past through moneysavingexpert group switch and uswitch, but nothing great there. I have tried all the usual comparison sites

Any ideas?

There are none. Electricity unit prices have gone up 30% since last year and gas about the same. No journos check their bills so no one has noticed.

Your bill will go up 20% or more depending on usage - standing charges also up so low users pay proportionally more.

Remember the savings model is a lie. U switch allows you to see the actual increase, or knock up a spreadsheet. You want actual unit costs, not the tariff comparison rate which is at best misleading.

I was on Eon for electricity and British Gas for gas. Went with So Energy and Zog Gas in the end. Standing charges for both are substantially lower than what I was on - zog's by over 10p a day compared to my BG tariff.

specialsubject · 03/08/2017 18:42

Were those standard tariffs? If so you can get cheaper. Op is on a dual fuel fix, the cheapest way to do it.

Zog gas prices nearly 3p a unit, up from 1.9p like everyone else. Agree that standing charges aren't bad but that 10p less a day saves you only £36 a year.

specialsubject I;m not looking at unit costs, but annual consumption- I know exactly how much gas & electric I use. I have switched supplier many times in the past 10 years or so, there just don't seem to be any good deals around just now.
The cheapest is 25% more than I am paying atm. I still have 6 weeks until the end of my current deal, I may have to bite the bullet, but will keep looking for now.
Thanks.

Yes, I am also a frequent switcher.

Bill = unit cost x units used plus standing charges x 365. Same thing as I said.

Unit costs have gone up 30% so yes, everyone's bills are rocketing. Don't worry though, inflation is only 3%. Bet Carney doesn't notice his bills...

Laska5772 · 03/08/2017 20:59

Ive just fixed 2 years with Ovo dual fuel £74 pm.. 3 bed detached

Cailleach666 · 03/08/2017 21:05

laska, just tried ovo- 42% more than I am paying now.

Laska5772 · 03/08/2017 21:21

Crikey!! who are you currently with ? ( too late for me though )

Laska5772 · 03/08/2017 21:25

I know exactly what i useo also.. Was also with Ovo before this fix (but not a fix) from uswitch deal but couldnt beat them..

Previous to that I had used moneysavingexpert group Eon deal ,but Ovo worked out cheaper when I looked again..

specialsubject · 03/08/2017 22:01

That price is not fixed, only the unit rates and sc are. Price will obviously depend on usage.

SnowiestMountain · 03/08/2017 22:07

Same situation as you and they've just gone up massively, I could get a 2 year fixed with Ovo on 31st July for £98, went back to Uswitch today to do it and the best is 12 months at £125 Sad

Cailleach666 · 03/08/2017 22:23

I'm currently with Sainsburys (Price promise 2017), paying £97 a month. THis will end next month.
Prior to that was with uswitch eon, before that edf with moneysaving group switch, before that was MSE and eon.
The past 4 years my energy costs have dropped every year. Cheapest I can find is now £121- same across several platforms and comparison sites.

My theory, and it just that - the high standard tariffs subsidise those who monitor bills and are able to switch. There is talk of price caps so the companies are raising the fix prices, loss leaders no longer work as people get smarter.

Time to start paying the real price of energy. Same as with food - it seems OK to have foreign workers paid bugger all, but when the locals might have to do it post brexit then suddenly it will no longer be OK.

Cailleach666 · 05/08/2017 13:35

Time to start paying the real price of energy

Wholesale energy prices have dropped by a third in the past couple of years- I don't see suppliers passing much of that on to the consumer.
Ofgem are critical.

That's from 2016 - but yes, up like a rocket and down like a feather. Still, that's privatisation for you, the companies are there to make profit.

MyNeighbourSnorlax · 05/08/2017 13:46

I'm gonna give Octopus a try next. Their quote for me is £10 a month less than I'm paying at the moment.

Cailleach666 · 05/08/2017 13:54

Ouch- Octopus 35% more than I am paying.

Thanks anyway.

I'm with Ovo pre-pay and last month gas and electric was £47. I live in a 4 bed, 3 storey terraced house.

Unfortunately the big increases are inescapable now. Inflation at 3%, eh?

Our Octopus deal has just ended. They are still one of the cheapest for us and I have found them to be an excellent company. Not one bit of bother and competent staff. We're staying with them as the next cheapest tariff saves us £28 a year and it's a company I've not come across.
If Octopus are vastly more expensive than your current rate then I would say your bills are going to go up as they are one of the cheapest.

SnowiestMountain · 11/08/2017 09:50

I've just switched to a 2 year deal with Ovo, it has gone up but it's nice to know we don't have to worry for a while
