Improving credit score quickly

Hi - I have just checked my check score which came up very poor. I plan to pay off all of my cards this month (£8k) and have called the electrol roll and asked why I am not on it. There is a defaulted debt from 2015 which I am chasing to find out what it is. What else can I do to build this quickly? TIA.

I was told that using contactless cards to pay for things helps because you are immediately paying a bill.

In the general scheme of things contactless payments can make you lose track of spending though, as in if you take a tenner from the chash point and use that it's just ten pounds. If you pay with your card and it's 12 pound you hardly notice the extra 2 quid, iyswim.

You're planning to pay off 8k worth of debt in one month?!!! Can you tell me your secret as I have 5k to clear by Jan

I was told that using contactless cards to pay for things helps because you are immediately paying a bill.

Using a contactless credit card isn't paying the bill immediately, it would still be debited to your CC account and you would pay the bill (whole or part of) each month. A contactless debit card wouldn't show on your credit file so will have no effect whatsoever.

OP I dont think there is a quick way to improve your score. Using a credit card and paying it off ijn full each month would help but it still takes time.

Seconding that once you have cleared any problems you just have to work away at building a credit record and this cannot be done quickly. I think some companies offer to improve your score but I would be wary. You have to almost go backwards iyswim in that you pay for as much as possible with a credit/store card (tempting to avoid using these if you are trying to manage money) and then pay them off every month

There is no quick fix. Pay off as much debt as you can. Keep one card and use it for a small amount each month making sure you pay it off in full every month.
Make sure you're on the electoral register and perhaps get a cheap sim only deal for your mobile phone if you don't have a contract already.

Make sure anything outstanding is paid off in full every month.

PS don't pay attention to your "score" it doesn't even exist! No one sees it apart from you.

Roystonv · 21/07/2017 20:44

Not sure what you mean 19?

AdoraBell · 21/07/2017 20:51

Ah, so what I was told was codswallop then Urethra? Ya live and learn, eh?

19lottie82 · 21/07/2017 23:57

Roy no one sees your "score" apart from you. If you apply for creidt, lenders don't see it. It doesn't actually exist it's just a number that a credit referencing agency makes up to try and encourage you to sign up to their subscription on the hope of seeing it "improve". I'm not saying it doesn't bear a slight reflection to your credit history..... but you could easily have a stab in the dark yourself, which is effectively what the CRA's are doing to promote a useless marketing tool.

19lottie82 · 21/07/2017 23:58

Your credit HISTORY is what you should be concerned about, not your "score".

It would probably take between 3 to six years to improve your credit rating. There is no quick fix. Look at moneysavingexpert.com for advice
