It's probably worth speaking to Citizens advice on your specific situation. They can advise you on what assistance you could possiby access and if you are claiming all benefits you may be entitled to.

Do you have a mortgage? Many providers will allow you a short payment holiday if there are unforeseen circumstances that mean you can't meet a couple of payments, which could help.

Payday lenders used to loan to almost anyone but so many people got into difficulties without understanding the consequences of taking out loans with fearful rates of interest that I think rules have been made much tighter on their lending.

Do you have a credit card? Or could you make use of an overdraft for a short period of time? Your bank may charge you a fee for using the overdraft facility but it could be much less than interest on a payday loan if you can pay it back quickly.

Failing that, do you have family or friends who would be willing to lend you some money with clear understanding of when you would pay it back? Be careful asking people for money though, as it can sometimes ruin friendships if people abuse others' good natures.

Hi OP - I'm afraid from the sounds of it, no one is going to give you a loan. And I'm not having a go but it also sounds like a loan is the last thing you need.

What do you need the money for? Do you have existing debt?

'Local' loan (sharks) I guess still exist, but not sure if small companies are subject to government rules years back to limit the interest charges - but even then, we are still talking such penal rates of interest, you will never be able to pay it back.

I agree with poster thatorchidmoment that by talking with your local CAB about your situation, you may be able to reorganise your debt fairly quickly - and that friends and family will be your best alternative.

If currently falling on deaf ears, and you really think you can pay it back, offer them a kind of written contract on a bit of A4 acknowledging the loan and some kind of repayment schedule - especially if no repayments can be can for x amount of months - as your friends and family might be Judge Rinder viewers, and thats why THEY may be 'judging' you, as repayments of loans WITHOUT an agreement, are not legally enforceable.

Just a thought.

www.colchestercreditunion.co.uk not a bank - a not-for-profit organisation that tries to help keep you out if the clutches of payday loan sharks

If you are caught in a spiral of ever-worsening debt you will not solve this by getting a new loan. It may be that rather than a loan you need assistance with an iva or bankruptcy and help to rebuild a sustainable plan for the future. You will need to cooperate with the help on offer - if you have stuff going on that is making the situation worse then putting a stop to that needs to be a priority.
