Best bank account for pocket money (10 yr old)

I'd like to open a bank account for Ds1 (or rather, I guess at his age it would be him opening the account) to put his pocket money into.

I want him to have a cash card if possible, and ideally for me to be able to set up a standing order to pay his pocket money in directly.

He doesn't spend money regularly, but likes to save up to be able to buy small Lego sets and books for himself from time to time and I'd prefer for his money to be in an account rather than him keeping cash lying around.

Any ideas? Interest rates aren't really an issue as the maximum balance will likely be small (sub £50 I should imagine). He already has a longer term savings account that pays ok interest but it's not for accessing on a regular basis and needs my signature anyway.

You don't get bank accounts with a debit card until age 11. You can get prepaid cards from age 8 but they have charges. Accounts for under 11 are savings accounts

Halifax children's accounts have a cash card.

GoHenry is brilliant. They get a cash card which they can buy things with (only up to the value of what's in their balance obviously) and you can transfer money to them and them to you extremely quickly online. You can set up a direct debit for pocket money. Just set it up for my nearly 10 year old and he loves it

I just wouldn't pay for goHenry, etc. I waited until mine were 11 and then they got a proper bank account with card

I think op just wants a cash card on the account, not a debit card.

I had a Halifax children's account with a cash card when I was younger. My sisters use Osper now but I'm not sure if there's charges!

dementedpixie · 19/07/2017 21:37

Yes Osper charges too

We got my 11 year a metro bank account with cash card really good product for youngsters can highly recommend it (plus it's free!)

dementedpixie · 19/07/2017 21:39

£2.50 A month or £24 A year for osper

sleepyhead · 19/07/2017 21:40

Yes, I saw that debit cards were only available from 11 and that's only 6 months away so the obvious thing would be to wait.

Gohenry sounds good but I don't want to pay really. I'll check it out and also Halifax for cash card accounts.

Thanks all Smile

We picked one with a branch near, so that the kids would be able to go in easily. I'm glad too, as they cannot access it online, so everything needs to be done in the bank.
