My pre paid metre is on emergency credit atm and after the cost of living this month I have no money to top it up and I have 2 children in the house. Is there anything I can do? I can't manage without and google hasn't helped... anyone else been in a similar situation and know a solution? Tia

Call your energy supplier right away.
How old are dc?

They can offer solutions or put credit on that you then pay back each time you load your key up.

I once had a key malfunction. Put &50 on it at my local shop, got home and it wouldn't register and was on emergency credit. They sent an engineer out who put a key in and loaded it up for me.
Try that

Call your supplier - they can extend your emergency credit which you then pay back bit by bit.

lougle · 04/07/2017 13:52

Unfortunately, the emergency credit is there to give you time to sort out the means of topping up the meter. It isn't there to be used until that runs out and then you start to deal with the empty meter.

It's the same situation as a bank account with an overdraft. The overdraft is there to give you a buffer when you run out of money. But people often include the overdraft in their budget once they have it.

I don't think crisis loans exist anymore, I'm not sure of any other sources of emergency loans.

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 04/07/2017 13:55

There are no longer crisis loans but local councils have "discretionary payments" for emergencies. The maximum is £60 and it's a one off thing, but when I applied I had the money the next day.

daydreamnation · 04/07/2017 13:55

Wow lougle thanks for that patronising, useless piece of advice. I'm sure the op feels positively enlightened now...
Op please call your supplier, they maybe able to help, do mention you have dc in the house.

lougle · 04/07/2017 14:15

It's not patronising, it's factual. It's called emergency credit for a reason. You are given £5 to give you time to top up the meter. If you use that £5 and ignore the fact that it's emergency credit, it will run out.

Mummyoftwox · 04/07/2017 15:16

Thankyou all for the advice I will call my supplier and look into an emergency payment. And hopefully that will get me somewhere till I can top up.

And yes lougle I know emergency credit will run out... I think that's pretty obvious, if I thought it was going to last The time I need it surely wouldn't have asked the question? But these things happen and with children in the house it's just not an option to go without. Everyone has their own situation and by the sounds of it I'm not as fortunate as you to not ever have to be in such a position.

The power companies are, I believe, not allowed to let a house with children have no power and have to give at least one top up. Make sure you tell them you have no power ( if it runs out), you cannot cook food for your children and the house is cold. Good luck.

ofudginghell · 04/07/2017 17:17

How did you get on op?did you call them?

Saiman · 04/07/2017 17:24

thethoughtfox thats not quite correct.

They may do a wind on but its not guarenteed to be same day. Though it usually should be. Also the ages of the kids are taken into account.

Op your supplier should have a scheme called discretionary credit or similar. You then pay it back weekly. Which you will need to remember. As extra money will be taken every week.

Also op if you are low income there is a scheme each year called Warm home discount. Applications usually open around august. That will give you £140 on your electric if you qualify. It wont help now, but could be a help over winter.

AdoraBell · 04/07/2017 19:52

Hope you got something sorted out OP

It's a lot quicker / cheaper to get the subway if you're going into manhattan. And it's really easy.

If you email your hotel they'll tell you where the nearest tube station is, there will be one within a block or 2 and chances are you will be able to get a direct train once you get off the express train from the airport.
