Improving credit score with no way of doing it!

Hi all.
I am hoping somebody can help. Please stick with me it might be a long one..
So I currently have a bad credit rating due to messing it up about 6 years ago. I have 2 defaulted accounts on their which will no longer be on view to lenders by this time next year.
The problem I am having is I got dropped a vast amount of points because I don't have any credit accounts open - I moved back to my parents when my landlord sold his house so I obviously have no bills such as water, gas or electric to pay anymore. And closing those accounts at my previous address dropped my credit rating.
Then I done something stupid and applied for a credit card which fooled me by telling me I was "100% preapproved" to then be declined which is yet another knock to my score. Such a naive thing to do on my part.

I want to buy my first home, which I am already to do financially but cannot get accepted by any mortgage lender due to my bad credit.
How am I meant to get it back up when I'm not allowed any credit to prove I can pay it?
Paying one of the family bills is out of the question as my parents are very funny about this kind of stuff and like things done perfectly with them being all in the know.
I feel like I'm loosing a battle here - I even offered to pay my sister's water bill but because I receive tax credits for my daughter they will accuse me of living somewhere else and committing fraud (concentrix accused me of living with my landlord last year based on us both having mail to his address so i know that's not an option)

Anybody been in any similar situation?

Please help!

Have you tried a vanquis credit card. The almost except anyone. Just buy small things on it and pay it off every month. It helped build my credit up.

I have a really bad credit score (bankruptcy) and I've been able to get a couple of credit cards so there are definitely some that you'd be eligible for. Vanquis is usually easy to get as mentioned (but not for me as they were one of my creditors!), I have Aqua and Capital One cards as well. Just make sure you only apply for the ones that are most likely to accept you (the ones aimed at bad credit), and space your applications. Also there are some catalogue credit accounts which are very easy to get (Littlewoods, Freemans, Kaleidoscope). The goods in those catalogues tend to be overpriced but they run regular sales, so I usually just buy some basics which are discounted enough to be at least a 'normal' price, and always pay it off before any interest gets added. Not sure how helpful the bill situation would be tbh, as I check all my credit records and none of my utility bills report to them.

Don't get a catalogue account they damage your credit rating. Mines went up with I closed my littlewoods and very account.

I have a vanquis and capital one and my credit rating is going up and up now

My credit rating went up when I opened catalogue accounts.

Go for credit card your going to get accepted for - stupid interest rate but spend a small amount each month and pay off but for a £1 and repeat.

Also dh opened a basic account and had wages paid into it, eventually they offered him a current account. Dh has no bills in his name and house isn't in his name but he's built his credit rating up.

Don't touch catalogues, friends credit rating plummeted
