OK so a utilities company is sending me a refund after their mess up.
I don't want the cheque and would rather it was left as credit on my account.

My problem is that say my legal name is Charlotte Bee but my known as name is Lottie Bee. I have been known as Lottie all my life and all bill accounts are in that name. My bank account (which no longer accepts cheque deposits anyway) is in the name of Charlotte as my passport and birth certificate say that.

The utilities company have sent me a cheque in the name of Lottie Bee.

Obviously I can't cash it. Any ideas. If I don't cash the check are they likely to be able to return the credit to my utility account.

Why can't you just tell them what you have written here?

viques · 27/06/2017 15:38

Your bank no longer accepts cheque deposits? which bank is that?

I think Lottie/Charlotte is close enough. a bit like Chris/Christopher, Valerie/Val, Elizabeth/Lizzie.

I am waiting for a call back. They were confused when I called earlier.
It's an online account.
Never had an issue before as everyone does bacs these days.

Never heard of a bank that doesn't accept cheques...

I banked a chq in my maiden name to my current account in my married name, unless it's a massive amount of money they'll accept it

RosieBdy · 27/06/2017 16:11

I had this once...
I'm known by my middle name but my bank a/c etc are in my 'proper' first name... I had a birthday cheque from a relative made payable to my middle name and the bank refused to let me pay it in. I managed to pay it in to my building society account in the end though...
Good luck!

PotteringAlong · 27/06/2017 16:15

You can take it to a western union point and they will take it and give you the cash I think?

BelafonteRavenclaw · 27/06/2017 16:18

My husband is uses his middle name daily. Let's say he's John Peter Smith, he once has a cheque send from an old landlord with a version of his name, let's say Pete Smythson. He explained it at the bank and they accepted it. But then his back accepted cheques.

ManchesterBee · 27/06/2017 16:21

Thanks.
It is an online only account.
I could open another account which will take it if I have to I suppose.

Hopefully though utility company will just take their money back.

Most online accounts allow cheque deposits either by posting to the processing centre, through the post office or at their high street presence (think First Direct and HSBC).

But personally I'd ask the energy co to reissue the cheque or do a BACS.

GreenHillsOfHome · 27/06/2017 16:33

For the amount that the cheque would be (lowish I imagine)...I'd probably ask a trusted friend or family member to pay it into their account using their banks automated deposit machine.

Wrong name entirely...for an amount that small it would probably still go through.

Ohyesiam · 27/06/2017 16:37

Same happened to me, I didn't notice, but they sent it back to me.
I couldn't get hold of the person who issued it, do I just presented it again, and they unknowingly overlooked of.

buckeejit · 27/06/2017 23:19

Is it first direct? I'm with them but can lodge cheques through the post office. They'll probably just check sort code & acc no anyway if you're lucky!

redjumper · 01/07/2017 21:52

I've paid in cheques that have been written to my maiden name many times, the bank suggested I just write a note on the back if the cheque to explain it's my maiden name, never had it rejected.
