Sold my car to a garage at end of December, it was due to be taxed 1st Jan. Gave garage reg docs and now I've got a fine - Am I going to have to pay it? Did I do something wrong?

don't you have to send something off rather than just give it to the buyer?

You are responsible for the vehicle until YOU send off the slip to say that it has been sold/passed on I'm afraid.

ceolas · 21/03/2007 21:18

You do have to send a portion of the reg documant off as well as handing the other bit over. I think it's your responsibility.

longwaytogoandabitfurther · 21/03/2007 21:19

hmm dh gave it all to dealer - signed i think

you have to tell the DVLA you no longer own it and send the form back

it is your responsibility as the registered keeper to tell the DVLA you no longer are the registered keeper

you could try writing to them and explaining what happened, but if you did not tell them, they won;t really take much notice

SoupDragon · 21/03/2007 21:20

Unfortunately you were meant to fill in and send off the bit on the reg document "sale to the motor trade" or somethng similar. You are liable for the vehicle until they are notified of the sale.

JustIvor · 21/03/2007 21:20

I don't know for sure, but isn't there a part of the documentation that you ought to keep and fill in and then send off to the dvla yourself? If there is and you haven't done this, can you go to the garage and ask for that part of the documentation back, perhaps? If it was me, I would ask their advice on the website (if there is one) or on the phone. Maybe you can write a letter giving all the details that normally get written on the form.

think i'm going to be stuffed for something else that dh has stuffed up. Fandabbydosey

If DH gave the whole form to teh dealer that doesn't count -0 you can't gurantee they will notify the DVLA on your behalf. It is YOUR responsibilty to notify teh DVLA that you are no longer hte registered keeper.

They have een running a major radio ad campaign round here to that effect so, although it is worth trying to discuss the issue with them I doubt it will get you very far.

SMSis30today · 21/03/2007 21:24

The reason hte law is like that is cos otherwise you could sell you vehicle to a criminal and then they don't notify of change of ownership (because they want to do criminally things in it) so you could get done for their crimes. Thats why it is down to the seller to notify them...
