Strange p60

Dh has received p60 from his employer - v small business has worked for them for 3 years. This year on his p60 the bulk of his wage is started "in previous employment" and rest is stated "in this employment".

He hasn't changed employers, address and business name the same. Only reason employer can give is that they changed accountants.

Is this right or is something iffy. Last year his whole wage was in the "in this employment" box

Compare the PAYE reference with the previous years P60.

I expect the PAYE scheme got closed, then a new scheme opened.
So jobA ended, jobB started.

As long as the contract has not changed, continuity of employment should have been kept, same job, same employer, just a different PAYE scheme.

Ask the employer - a change of accountants does not mean they change PAYE scheme?

Perhaps they took the payroll over part way through the year and did it wrong.

The tax will probably be fine either way, but even so I would not be happy unless I got a decent explanation

(am a Finance Director)

if the new accountants use a different payroll software, that may be the reason (sometimes it can be easier to set it up as a new employment). Or an error was made in transferring over the details, in which case the software I use tells you to mark the employee as having left, and then rejoin them.

If the totals and tax code is correct, then it should be OK

Thank you for replys. I have queried (they have always dealt with me for dh money/wages/tax as dh has problems with maths/figures). They just telling me that's how the new accountants have done it and won't offer explanation as they say they don't know (sceptical) and got very annoyed when I kept pushing for an explanation.

Paye ref has remained the same. I have a feeling old accounts were doing the tax or a tax free allowance wrong as dh taxable wage has had 3k stuck on it and his tax free pay/allowance dropped - which we didn't realise until we receive the p60 as he total wage paid remained the same.

dh wage is made up of taxable pay and non taxable pay due to nature of his work

This 3k increase appears in the 'in this employment' box and his original wage amount is in the 'previous employment'
