Council tax reduction?

Hi everyone. Looking for some advice if possible.

Currently I rent a room in a house, and soon I am looking to move in with my boyfriend. He works full time in Tesco and I am on income support due to being someone's carer. Would I be able to get any council tax support as I'm on a low income? Would this also affect my HB?

Once you move in with your boyfriend you will need to declare it to dwp and will most likely stop you IS.

Your housing benefit and council tax support will be based on the household income of you and your partner. As council tax reduction are now localised schemes how much you would get would be dependent on your local scheme.

As Stick said your joint income will be counted.

In addition we were actually planning to have separate rooms (we still Like our own space) should I just say we are single to avoid bedroom tax?

No that's benefit fraud

Auspiciouspanda · 10/06/2017 22:24

Of course you shouldn't commit benefit fraud.

Malfoyy · 10/06/2017 22:42

Separate rooms or not you are a couple so should not lie about that!

You'll still get carers allowance based on your own income but may lose the IS as he is working.

I thought I read somewhere his income is disregarded as I'm claiming IS on grounds of being a carer?

You can still claim carers allowance but income support would stop.

Stickmangate · 11/06/2017 09:17

It dosnt matter if you share a bedroom or not if you are a couple and living together and the outside world friends and family consider you a couple then if you don't declare it then it is benefit fraud. As this is what the LA will look at

Stickmangate · 11/06/2017 09:20

Oh and if you are private renting then there is no "bedroom tax" this is only for ha and local authority properties. You will only be allowed the 1 bed rate of LHA. if you declare you are not a couple then as you share you would only be allowed the shared room rate about £60-80 per week.

No his income isn't disregarded , you will lose IS but keep the full amount of carers allowance.
