Bedroom tax abd daughter in Uni

Hi. Sorry for some help/advice as i am struggling with understanding the bedroom tax and how it affects us with our daughter in uni. We live in wales and our daughter started uni in bath at end of last Sept. I posted off a letter to my local council telling them her address etc, as we claim counciltax/housing benefit as my husband is claiming ESA as he has been long term ill. 2 weeks ago i received a letter requesting proof of child benefit for her so i went to local office and explained that I sent a letter last sept stating her address etc and they said they didn't receive it and now that she is in uni i need to start paying bedroom tax immediately with arrears backdated to Sept. They then suspended our HB pending further info so icwent back to office to provide it. They were asking how often she been home which is only a few days as its a long way and if she was coming home for holidays (at the time i thought she wasn't but now she is). I have received an ammended bill for HB which states £11 off our benefit for bedroom tax and another £11 taken off for arrears. Speaking to my father in law, he said that we shouldn't be paying bedroom tax because this is still her permanent home (she is registered to vote here) so i am trying to find out if this is correct? She has been living in her student loans and had not claimed any benefits and is returning to uni for her second year in sept. Will her coming home affect our housing benefit at all as well? Thanks in advance for your help :)

If the absence is temporary (less than 52 weeks) and it is her permanent home, you are exempt afaik.

Hi I'm a housing benefit assessor

You need your daughter to get the council tax exemption certificate from her uni, give it to them and request an extra bedroom be added to your claim as you need to keep her bedroom for her for non-term times.

What you need to do is get a certificate from her university which gives the start and end date of her course and hand that into the council. She is away studying your home is still her main home so you should not be effected by the bedroom tax. For your benefit I think she will be included in your household with nil income for the duration of her course. However you really need her to get that certificate, the university will be used to providing them. Good luck
