How much do you think this will be?

I am extremely lucky that my df built up a business from scratch which over 40 years plus became very successful. Df is still working now, doing something else, but is approaching 70 and so i get the impression he is beginning to think about inheritance for his dcs. This is me and two other dds.

They want a meeting with us soon to discuss something. I had a feeling it was to do with money and then saw dm who said they ve sold a house and df is thinking of splitting it 3 ways between me and my siblings. She told us it was a 'substantial amount' then left it at that.

I have no idea how much it would be but told dh this.

How much would you think was a substantial amount?

Well, you'd have to know where the house was and what type it was for a guess to be made.

Lucky you, though!

There are so many thoughts running through my head. I am actually shocked and don't know how to feel as I feel so grateful to my dm and df for this. This could set us up for life potentially. It could make us mortgage free. We want to try and plan what to do and want to put various things on hold until we know more. We want to be sensible with this money and use it wisely to potentially set ourselves and perhaps our dcs up for life. We can't ask my parents how much it is obviously but we keep speculating so we can try and plan.

Df was absent for most of my childhood and I had a very difficult relationship with him. I felt criticised by him and often wondered if he loved me. At the time I was young and was just upset he wasn't there. As I got older our relationship got better and I guess I began to understand him more. This wasn't until my late 20s though. I guess I know now this was his intention all along. To provide for his family and look after us long after his death. But because of this I also have very mixed feelings about getting this money.

A) how long is a piece of string
B) I wouldn't plan anything until you have actually got some money in your hand

Yes flora you're right. There's so many thoughts going through my head. I can't help but think what we could do with the money. Should we move, pay off our mortgage, maybe both?

We re due to have various things done on our house soon and I am wondering if I should cancel them. I guess a 'substantial amount' means something different to different people.

I wouldn't put your life on hold waiting to see , just don't spend what you haven't got because you think it's going to be forthcoming .

Depending on the area the property was, that should give you an indication of roughly how much it could be. Where I am for example the average house price is about £90k so that would mean £30k to each sibling, whereas in London you would get a hell of a lot more!

To some people £500 is a substantial amount, to others it could be £500,000.
