Appealing a tax credit back payment?

Hi my youngest daughter is disabled, she has recently been awarded Middle rate dla (although not the rate she's entitled to.)
I informed tax credits and have waited weeks for them to update her claim to add the premium.
I was told over the phone that 'not to worry you'll receive the back payment when it all goes through'
I was relying on that back payment to pay for the therapy she doesn't receive currently.
My partner works all the hours god sends and pays thousands on tax (as did prior to having my dd)
They have today informed me that it will be paid as £7 a week and spread out until it's all paid to us instead of as a lump sum.

I'm feeling disheartened that now we won't be able to pay for the therapy or the equipment just yet. Up until recently we've been living hand to mouth and saving for it was not possible.
I feel cross because my partner is taxed so much, and the payment of the back pay being spread Is a kick in the teeth.
They could have spread it out more in keeping with the amount owed to us but have chosen to pay it back as the bare minimum. Not to mention the fact it's taken them so long to update our payment amounts.

Is there any way of appealing for it to be either paid back as a lump sum or in parts?
