Overcharged in the supermarket!

Somerfield supermarket is just around the corner from work and I pop in there for odds and ends, milk, bread etc,(never a big shop). Browsing my online banking just now, I noticed a debit from Somerfield for £40.76, which I know is not possible (more likely to have been £4.76)! unfortunately I punch my pin number without ever checking the amount! I don't have a receipt, do I have a leg to stand on?

I don't know but i hope you get it back.

KathyMCMLXXII · 13/03/2007 19:30

You couldn't have got cashback?

BizzyDint · 13/03/2007 19:30

you should have checked at the time. however as a gesture of goodwill they might help you out.

they may still have a record of the receipt on their electronic journal if you can remember the exact day. that will show what you bought and you can dispute it. they might also still have recordings of the CCTV for that day..but i think they'll just refund you rather than faffing about with that.

did you get cash back - I was fuming about a £35 from martins the newsagents recently, fortunately just before I rand bank to complain I remembered that i'd asked for £30 cash

It's difficult because they would have to admit that their tills didn't add up. HOWEVER it is ALWAYS worth sending a note to them saying 'umm what's gone wrong here' I had a similar situation with Sainsburys - something showed up on my bill I never bought and I wrote and said 'look I can't prove this but I think that a mistake has been made' and they sent me gift vouchers to cover the mistake and then some.

Normally I'm hopeless at checking my bank statements but this just jumped out at me! I can't stand our local Somerfield either, it's tiny and always busy-you know how you feel pressurised to hurry up packing and move along to make room for the next person?

Next time, take your time and sod everyone else in the cue. Just pretend to be 80. Or pay with coppers, that's always good for a laugh

supersox · 13/03/2007 19:39

Definitely didn't get cash back - I never do from Somerfield cos it's always so bloody busy! I know it's not a huge amount but it's really irritating!

If they won't play ball, I might be tempted to tell them exactly why I never do my weekly shop in their hellish little supermarket!

This happened to me in a camp site, and I was charged £147 for a bottle of wine! I complained, the bank investigated, the camp site never responded and i got my money bake. I would complain, what have you got to lose?

supersox · 13/03/2007 19:54

Go in with bank statement ( to prove time date) ask to see cash supervisor and ask them to check their till results for that day, if u can rem the till u went to point it out to her. If no joy write to head office to complain and am sure u will get ur money back/voucher equivalent. They are gits they charged me twice for 1 lot of shopping and i know of many more people its happened to. Always check receipts and bank statements. hope that helps
