Right - I have not worked since 2004 (when I gave up to have my ds) since then I have had my dd aswell, so have not returned to work. My dh's job is not very well paid so at the moment we claim working family tax credits (to dh's account) and child tax credits (to my account) - I have just applied for a job and have an interview on Thursday - the job is for Saturdays and Sundays only from 9am-6pm, which is 9 hours a day so 18hours in total but with a lunch break that would be 16 hours per week that I would be working. I seem to remeber reading somewhere that if you work less than 16 hours a week it doesn;t affect your credits but I don't want to sound like a numpty by phoning to ask (plus the fact that they will probably tell me the wrong thing anyway) - does anybody know anything that may help me

Yes, you need to phone them no mater how many hours you work and you need to tell them how much you'll earn, it will affect how much you get after April. If you are working more than 16 you may get some help for any childcare costs you pay.

1980cat - thanks for that - I was just sure that I read somewhere that if you work less than 16 hours you didn't need to tell them. I will wait and see if I get the job on Thursday and then go from there - thanks

If you are working less than 16 hours they may not take the work details from you as it will make no difference, in most cases anyway but (why is there always a but with them) if your partner works less than 30 hours and your hours will take you jointly over thirty then let them know (means a bit more money for you if you are working over thrty hours). They will however still need to know what your are earning as in theory you could be workinig 10 hours and being paid thousands of pounds.

I only worked 10 hours a week and they do take what ever you earn into account and it does affect your tax credits
