getting a house valued, does it affect your council tax banding?

Was chatting to my neighbour the other day who bought her house about 20 years ago. Over the years they've done various things to it, new windows, put in french doors out to the garden, new doors, new kitchen etc etc.

She was saying that she would like to get the house valued to see how much it's worth now but someone had told her that if she gets this done whoever values it then tells the council and they will change her council tax band.

I don't think this is correct as a friend of mine had hers valued a few months ago and I'm pretty sure her council tax didn't change. Can't ask my friend as she's on holiday at the moment.

So does anybody know if this is true or not?

no, people are always getting their houses valued , especailly before and after building work.

Hi
This has happened to a neighbour of mine when they bought their new house.
If the house has had an extention built after the last council tax valuation it can affect the band you may be in, if the house remains the same size but is updated etc... it wont affect it (I think it was 1993)
